Need help with 85 Accord fuel pump.
Greetings,
Hopefully I'm correct on what I think is wrong with the car! Saturday I drove it to the store and out of nowhere it starts really hestitaing. I got to the store and shut the car off. I then tried ot restart it. It wouldn't start. There was a lound ticking coming from underneath by the driverside passenger door.
Sounds like a fuel pump to me! I found it's location and dropped it down. Looking to find some sort of reset switch. I didn't find anything like that. The reason I was looking for this is that in my experience with Fords resetting the FP is needed every now and then. They tick like this too when it happens. I've tried disconnecting the battery and reconnecting but it made no difference. The fuse is good to.
Is there a reset swith for this? If not, does it just sound like the FP crapped out? The car has 134k miles on it if it matters. Also, if it is bad, to change it out is the only thing I need to do to release the pressure is remove the gas cap, disconnect the batter, remove the pump and replace it with a new one?

My old 85 HB Accord was doing the same thing back in 1995. It was the fuel pump that went bad. The ticking is the fuel pump trying to prime itself.
You'll need to replace the fuel pump, as it is usually the oscillating diaphragm inside the pump that goes bad.
Try going to AutoZone to pick one up, as one from a savage yard may have the same problem, or may be about to have the same problem.
Have fun replacing it. I had a shop do mine.

another thing u might wanna look into replacing first is the fuel pump relay. On my pop's 84 accord, we went through like 2-3 different fuel pumps, before I realized it was the relay. After replacing the relay, I put the original fuel pump back in and its been running strong ever since.

Atta kid. I didn't know if anyone was gonna mention it.
My 85 lx started bucking on the highway one day. Found out later it was fuel related. Went through carb cleaner, new plug, wires, new fuel filters(2), and dropping the gas tank before I bought a chiltons manual. Eventually traced the problem back to either the main relay, fuel pump relay, or the fuel pump.
I wound up having to replace the fuel pump, went to a junkyard, pulled one myself for $20, and never had another problem with it. Probably because I had already replaced anything else that had gone wrong.
