Default DX issue

new here, not sure if this goes here but if it dont, my bad.

my BF has a '90 civic hatchback DX, and aside from it being its normal POS (it burnt oil since he bought the thing,) he recently burnt a hole in one of this exhaust valves.. since he couldn't really drive it running on three cylinders he decided that while fixing that problem, he'd fix the oil problem (the rings were sticking,) so we spent a week and a half after school fixing his car.

there was a tear in the vacuum hose right where it connects to the EGR valve thing, so he just cut it and stuck it on above the tear..

We got it back together last night, and when he started it, the idle was really high and it was loping pretty bad.. we checked everything it could have been and nothing was wrong, but when we took the valve cover back off there was a piece of the vacuum hose laying inside of it.. so we took it out, called eachother names for bein dumb and turned it back on, the idle was still high (we fixed that,) but it did stop loping..

Im not sure if it was just coincidence, or it was actually just that little piece of rubber hose, so if someone could clear me up on that it'd be great

Are you throwing any codes ? It sounds like you have a vacuum leak some where. Spray some carb cleaner and if there is a leak some where the idle will rise. Also make sure you throttle plate is closing all the way.
