Type R or GT-S
To cruise.... GTS.........
For a lifetime of fun that is limitless and for a driver who is going to explore. .. Type R...
Not to be Bias, but Type Rs have much more in them from the factory than just looks. GTSs are good, But have more of a nice sporty car look without the track bred suspension. Hope this helps.. Just my opinion.

heheh i get to answer this one first.. speaking from my personal experience.
i own a 01 itr and my brother a 00 gts.. R's are getting stolen mad crazy so it aint even worth the trouble.. parts are widley available for R's but expensive.. there isnt that much stuff for celica but i've seen some good products for it.. me and my brother races and he smoked me by 2 cars lol! all i do is hang out with most honda owers daily.. that have much faster cars then myself (mine is stock) on my bro's GTS he simply unbolted the rear section.. it sounds like an n1 muffler now and it was free! the car bones the fugg out! when vvti hits at 6K it pulls like an h22 lude! overall if you are just looking for daily driver you will be more then happy with the celica, a very nice comuter car with great performance.
But then again, both GTS and R are totally different cars too many things to list, and in many threads these things were argued over and over again.. if you are looking for a car to "cruise in" like you mentioned celica is the way to go.

If you're getting a Type-R just to cruise around and look cool, just get the GT-S. It's probably more comfortable and costs less. The Type-R needs to be out the track, or at least doing auto-x to be fully appreciated. I bought my R in May of this year and have taken it autocrossing 13+ times and to the to the track three times and I have never, ever regreted buying it and I love every second of owning it. However, I don't think it's the car that I would buy just to cruise. It's not the most comfortable car in the world, and it lacks features like cruise control. If you want an Acura to cruise in, get the RSX Type-S. My friend just got one and it's WAY more refined and comfortable than my Type-R (but not nearly as fun on the track).
My advice: If you're going to use it for what it was designed for, get the Type-R. Otherwise get the GT-S

Huh? He must not be stock, b/c I've SEEN the Celica's forum, those guys run 15s in GT-S stock.

Type-R:
5 fairly race tuned gears that allow you to be in the powerband from 5700rpm in 1st all the way to the rev limiter in 5th.
Excess weight stripped out, including some sound deadening (mmm....lots of lovely revving engine noise), special materials used in construction to further reduce weight. Attention paid to balancing the car, though I don't believe it is 50-50 (60-40 I think).
Race tuned 4-corner double wishbone suspension.
VTEC
Bigger 4 wheel disc brakes
Celica GT-S:
6 gears poorly tuned to do 0-60 as fast as possible, resulting in your dropping out of the powerband on the 2-3 shift.
Lovely sound deadening (though you still get a good amount of yummy engine noise)
Front strut, rear double wishbone.
Vvt-I
4 wheel disc brakes
I'll start by leaving it at that. A lot of the information was from memory, so a little may be wrong.
It all comes down to what you want. If you want no holds barred performance, with some luxury spared to get it, go for the R. If you want a car that is pretty fast, but also has some luxury, get the Celica. Personally, I like the R's interior better than the Celica's. The Celica had a lot of hard, cheap Toyota plastic all over the place. The R has nice squishy dash, and just seems better appointed inside. The R also romped the Celica in tests performed by Sport Compact Car (the Celica romped both the GS-R and the Prelude SH in that test).
They are both great cars. You just need to drive them both to figure out what you want in a car. There are sacrifices you'll have to make for the R that you wouldn't for the Celica (can't take it to shady places, higher incidence of vandalism/theft, idiots trying to race you all the time) but I think it is all worth it.
Downside is that you can only find an R used now, whereas you can still get a brand new Celica.
The Celica was my choice right behind the R when I bought my new car.
Good luck! Congrats on your purchase, whatever it might be.

BESIDES, the question in this thread is what this person should get just the "cruise" around, so the answer is ITR. And they are many reasons to back it up.
I got a friend thats works @ the local Toyota Dealership in the service department, and he said the celicas are yamaha engines, any truth to that...
What are the pros and cons of each?

My best friend bought a GTS a few months before I got my R. I was impressed. I think the GTS is ugly, and it doesn't handle nearly as well as the R (my impression). I also found the GTS pretty cramped inside. It didn't have enough headroom. I wouldn't tell anybody to buy one over the other. I got the R because I liked the higher performance in the handling department of the R and it's what I'd always wanted. I'm a long time Toyota lover, but I would take the R anyday over the GTS.
Believe me, I've tried "cruising" in da R and da concept just doesn't exist. Once you tap on that accelerator, you'll almost always want to take it near or to the redline. Especially after a stressful day at work.
If I had to pick one to drive everyday it'd definitely be a Celica. I'd give up a little edge in performance for the fact that there's a greater chance that when I park the Celica, it'll still be there when I get back. How about an RSX Type S? That would make a nice daily driver also.
