Default Grinding gears shifting into 3rd.

Hey guys,
I have a 95 Prelude S that I just bought and seems to be in perfect shape in almost every way except for 3rd gear. No matter how perfect I shift into 3rd it's always rough and there is always grinding until it's completely in gear. This isn't my area so I'm not sure where to start looking. The rest of the gears seem to be fine. It's a smooth shift into 1st, 2nd, 4th and 5th.

Anyone have any ideas?

Regards,
-Tony

It's the 3rd gear synchro going bad. It happens to a lot of prelude transmissions. Do a search about synchro, you'll find a lot of info on it. You can try running GM synchromesh tranny fluid as a bandaid to fix the problem temporarily.... sooner or later you'll need a rebuild.

Just get penzoil synchromesh from autozone... same **** but a lot cheaper, and after that try and come up with the extra cash to get a new synchro and installation b/c penzoil can only do so much for only a limited amount of time

If you replace everything, you are looking at spending around 800 just on parts and around $200-250 on labor. Thats IF you remove the tranny and install it back yourself.

Any idea what a tranny shop would quote for labor and parts?

i got a '00 lude, and all it took was missing 3rd one time and i needed a rebuild, as far as i know third is a problem for all prelude owner, anyways, it costed like 900 for a good rebuild & a lifetime warranty

Actually I've been doing that since yesterday. I noticed that it worked well. But I also noticed that if I go from 2nd to nutral and let the car rev down to under 3k and THEN shift into third it doesn't grind. I've only done that a few times so far so I'm still testing out that situation.

well you could also double clutch it then it shouldn't grind.

I'm working my double clutching now too It's going to take me a while though so I'm going with a combo of penzoil synchromesh and going from 2nd -> 4th -> 3rd ... for now

the syncro costs about $3, the big cost is labor.

UPDATE

had the old transmission fluid flushed out and had it filled with synchromesh ... no change.. all of my other gears shift as smooth as silk though Looks like dipping 4th gear or double clutching until I get the synchro replace or tranny rebuilt or something else.. I'm getting better at double clutching though .. so that's a plus

it takes a good 400 miles/week or two for the syncromesh to kick in....
