does my car have gears?
Hey guys, I just bought a 92 Honda Prelude SI auto and i'm pretty sure it's not stock. I have driven other Preludes and know how they feel stock. Cruising at 60mph, what should my rpm's be at? Also, every time the car shifts, it feels really hard. I think the car might have a chip with the shifts made harder. What else can it be, it almost feels like a shift kit, the line pressure can be controlled by the computer on the 92 right? Anyways, any info you guys could give me would be appreciated.
BTW, the only other things the car has are a muffler and cold air intake, those are the only visable mods.

No, it probably doesnt have gears cause they would cost like 2,000 dollars cause they have to be custom made, and i dont think that a guy with just i/e would do that. Youre probably just imagining things, maybe you should lay off the crazy pills, haha j/k.
Well i'm not sure if my car has gears or not. I think stock the Prelude already comes with at least a 4.10 final drive ratio. I do know that my car doesn't just have a muffler and cai because it feels a whole lot quicker than that, the shifts are extra hard like no stock car and on the back plate it says "get tuned, ichiban motorsports." The guy who sold me the car has no idea because all of the aftermarket stuff was put on by the previous owner...
Well who knows what he did. For all you know he could have raised conpression, put new internals, installed a cam, port and polish, ect. So we cant really tell what the guy did to it. I guess you could open it up and find out, but i would just call the guy who owned it before him and ask what he did. And what they said about the shifting.

Well i'm going to get the tranny fluid changed either tomorrow or the next day. It definately doesn't feel like the tranny is going bad. The shifts are not sloppy, they feel like the line pressure has been increased. I know there hasn't been any internal engine modification. Don't get me wrong, it doesn't feel incredibly fast, it feels similar to my parents 3.5 Altima, probably a little slower. Based on previous cars that I have owned and driven, I would say that the car has been tuned (possibly dyno tuned or just chip) and the muffler and cai add a little bit as well. I forgot to mention the car has lightweight wheels, so I would estimate the car weighs about 2750 or so.
Dude, it's just the way the Prelude trannys are. I thought the same thing when I first got my auto Lude. It shifted hard and it even jerked me on shifts. I thought it was abnormal but it isn't. It's just uncomfortable at first but then you get used to it.

Add a header, get a high-flow cat and enlarge the exhaust piping. You could also add some pullys and do some minor stuff like ignition and so on. It all depends on how extreme you want to go.

probably b/c u asked an semi-retarded qustions. "gears" on Hondas dont just swap out like they do on a mustang. it takes a lot more work, and typically, no one makes them for preludes. and i am willing ot bet your car really isnt any faster, i know when i drive my 84 bmw 318i it feel fast just b/c how the tranny shifts, and the engine revs, but the thing is slow as hell. never really noticed the slowness of it till i bought my Lude about 4 years ago. then i knew
, its just your imagination, line up with another Lude and see what happens

When I had an auto Prelude, the AEM accessory pullies made a nice difference - I would reccommend them for an automatic

I have a good idea as to how fast my car is. My parents own a 3.5 Altima and my brother owns a slightly modded 4.6 DOHC Lincoln Mark VIII. My Prelude feels quick but a bit slower than the Altima and a lot slower than the Mark VIII. The Mark VIII has run a best of 14.3 and I think the Altima can do high 14s, maybe low 15's so I would guess that my car can run a mid 15 second 1/4 mile. You never know until you run it tho...
I have 126k on the motor, should I be concerned about changing the fuel pump pretty soon? Is the Walbaro 190LPH a good choice or what do you guys reccomend for the Lude...?

I think the final drives of autos and manual should be the same. What RPM does your tach sit at when you're going 80mph?
Mine is at 4k RPM at 80mph
5k RPM at 100mph

very possible. its probably weighing down the back of your car. alot of people even the balance by placing NOPI stickers on the hood.. but i would consult a professional before making such modifications..

it's simply an econo (read: detuned) version of the VQ35DE, the same motor in the 350z. don't tell me you expect the same performance engine in a family sedan as you do in a 2 door sports car. and he didnt say it was the EXACT same, just the same, in which case he is right. btw low 16's i'd say is an underestimate, especially if it's had some light modding.
I have done reasearch on the differences between the Altima and 350Z engine and they are almost exactly the same. Obviously, the 350Z is rwd and the Altima is fwd so they are mounted differently. Besides that, the cams and heads are the same. The intake manifold is a bit different and so is the ECU tuning. Everything else is the same...
