Advancing my timing!!!
I asked my mechanic if it would be alright to advance my timing to +18 deg, He said "Hell with 18 go all the way to 20" He said that would be alright becuase of the our hight altitude. So I think tomorrow I will try it out, and test it(steep hill, 5th gear, and a/c) and see if there is any pinging. Oh yeah, the altitude wher I live is 3000-3500.
Yes, please let us know your findings. I'm also curious to know if it's better to use lower octane gasoline at high altitudes for a quicker burn.
BTW, you don't know how glad I was to see that this wasn't another "is it ok to advance my timing to 18 deg?"

that fugger doesnt care if you got holes in your pistons does he?? Im sure he would LOVE for you to come back and pay for a head re-build

You will not be in factory spec and could void your warranty (if you have one still)
Yes there is a knock sensor, but I think you should keep it to no more than 18.

Don't do it.... Ask around first and see if ou can find anyone else that has already done it. They can tell you how it raped their engine... or how they felt more power with no problems....
My mechanic wants nothing but the best for my engine. He knows what he is talking about, probably beter so than most of you, Chris. I am pretty good friends with him as well, not just a customer. If he was in it just to make money on rebuilding my motor, he would not be teaching me how to build my motor the right way so I do not have to pay him to fix it when I mess it up. Also if you would have read my name, BLK94RS, you would have know that my car is a 1994, way past any warrantbey, and a RS which does not have a Knock sensor because it is not a vtec motor it is a b18b non-vtec.
We do get 92 octain in Oregon, I have never ran anything else in my car since the day I bought it, so that will not be a probalm. I am only doing this to see if it works. If I hear detination I will take it back to 18. I'll post my findings.

thanks!
Im glad you have a mechanic on your side. ...and they do offer extended warranties.
My bad for not paying attention to your name.
*Insert foot into mouth*

Hell, at the RACE-TRAC up in Davie (Florida) they sell 103 Octane good price too... Don't live up there tho... 45 minute drive to tank up is kinda mental.
You'd prolly be able to run 20 w/o a problem w/ 92+....
Long term concerns ?
Friend runs 18+ in a 93 Si Hatch, 110K on the od for the last 3 years... no problems mon....

Whats with 91 octane man? Ive never seen less than 93 premium here in Florida. Why do they have lower octane premuim gas in different parts of the country?
Emissions law was jus made California! No gas station can sell or advertise higher than 91. If they do they are lying and if they are not lying they will be shut down. Something about a chemical was takin out and that made it 91!
99 octane, thats not in the US, is it??
what kind of gas you get (in the way of octane rating) is due mostly to the altitude of your region and the laws of your state. as to california, one of the chemicals they started using for increasing the octane was supposedly doing more damage to the environment than lead was. it is what you get for living with a bunch of tree huggin hippies
as to the advancing of your timing.
don't go whole hog all the way up to 18-20, take it in increments, and test it.
good luck.

i am so lost with this advanced timing stuff its ridiculous. what exactly does it do and more importanly how do you do it? can you do it yourself? is it safe on stock engines? i have an intake but that doesn't really make my car 'not stock'. thanks for any input.
I just got done advancing my GS-R's timing to 18, I'm happy with it. No ping or anything.
On the subject of advancing to 20, I personally wouldn't, but i believe that would be fine in the situation you describe, especially if your mechanic said it's fine. I would be very critical of how the engine sounds for the first little bit of driving just so you don't hurt anything...

I was planning on taking it to +18, it it felt okay take it to +19, then +20. The second I hear any pinging its going back down to +18. As for how you do it check vtec.net out ( http://integra.vtec.net/engine/timing.html ), they explain it pretty well.
92 octain in Oregon does not come cheep. When I filled up last night, it was at $1.99 a gallon. In the last month or so its gone all the way up to $2.04 a gallon. Is it safe to run octain boost? I can get NOS octain boost for about $4.00 a canister through my work. Will it harm anything to run a full bottle per tank? about what would it take your octain count to assuming I started out with 92?
Hey Chris, sorry for jumping all over you. Somtimes it just makes me mad when people come to assume somthing before they know the whole story, even though you were just looking out for my engine in a way.
