Default Transmission / Clutch knocking

When I crank up the car I hear a knocking. If I push in the clutch it goes away. If I'm costing I can get it to go away by depressing clutch and playing with it.

Does this sounds like a clutch or a transmision problem? Anyone got any tips on debugging?

Nick
