Replacing synchros/gears
Background:
I started grinding the 2-3 shift at high rpms at redline. I was just at a track event, and beat on that already worn synchro pretty bad. Now it grinds even at low rpms on the street.
I will be swapping a 4.875 FD in this winter, and will take that opporitunity to replace worn synchros as well.
Question:
1) There are 3 synchros in our tranny, correct? the 1-2 the 3-4 and the 5?
2) If I grind the 2-3 shift, it means the 3-4 synchro is bad?
3) Would 3rd gear normally need to be replaced, or just the synchro?
4) Is it advisable to replace all synchros at this time, or just the problematic ones?
Thanks for you input

Yeah I was wondering the same thing. Does anyone know how spendy this is going to get because my tranny is off right now so I could fix mine. Is it difficult to do?

1-2, 3-4, and 5-R (Three total)
Here's the 5-R syncro:

2) If I grind the 2-3 shift, it means the 3-4 synchro is bad?
If you grind going into third, not coming out of second, then yes that would indicate the 3-4 syncro si where the issue is.
3) Would 3rd gear normally need to be replaced, or just the synchro?
Just the Syncro.
4) Is it advisable to replace all synchros at this time, or just the problematic ones?
Depends. They run ~100-125 each. It's better to replace all (basically new trans after that) but do you want to spend the $

Jeff - How hard is this project to undergo? I need to replace two syncros in my brothers tranny ('95 LS) which will be cheaper than buying a whole new tranny, just wana know how hard it'll be. TIA
It's easier than doing a motor swap. Just be sure you have a Hemls and follow it closely. If you can do a timing belt change, you can do this.
