Well, I could say I told you so, but I am sure you knew the risk before you did it. Be prepared for some very expensive insurance when you get your license back till say about 50 years old.

Officers Impound 60 Cars In Street-Racing Sting Operation!

Denise Ellen Rizzo
Tracy Press, CA

Law enforcement officials looking to stop illegal street racing in Tracy on Saturday morning had a plan — hit the drivers where it hurts. Take their cars.
And so they did, towing more than 60 cars away for 30-day impounds.
“We wanted to send a message,” said California Highway Patrol Lt. Dave Rouse. “It doesn’t do any good to put them in jail. We need to put their cars in jail.”
The sting involved six different law enforcement agencies — Tracy, Manteca and Ripon police departments, CHP, auto theft task force officials and county sheriff’s deputies.
At precisely 1 a.m., officers shut down the illegal races inside Patterson Pass Business Park off Mountain House Parkway.
Led by the CHP, about 40 officers in police cars and motorcycles swooped down on the unsuspecting racers.
Their goal was to catch more than 300 vehicles and about 1,000 observers.
They were successful.
Racers reacting to the arrival of the police were best described by Rouse who said, “It’s like hitting a beehive with a stick — they scatter everywhere.”
Realizing their means of escape was blocked, the racers eventually settled down, lining the street with a sea of vehicles — all shapes and sizes — two rows deep.
“My first thought was to get out of here,” said James Winfrey, 18, of Richmond. “I knew I was in trouble.”
Winfrey was among the first of those to have their cars impounded. His 1971 Chevrolet Camaro was videotaped racing by undercover officers earlier in the night.
Working with an on-call judge, James Cadle of the Tracy branch of San Joaquin County Superior Court, officers acquired new court orders to add to their impound list of 78 cars.
Officers said street-racing enthusiasts come to Tracy from as far away as Sacramento and the Bay Area.
“I come every weekend,” bragged Matt Souza, 18, of Tracy, while leaning against his Honda Civic. “Danger is all part of it. This isn’t fair.”
The majority of the racers said they wouldn’t come to Tracy if there was a legal track for them to use.
“There’s nowhere we can go legally to do it,” said 22-year-old Patrick Buna of San Leandro. “We’re not bothering anybody. The cops should let us do our thing.”
Jeffrey Baesa of Martinez said he came with his friends, Jeffrey Harrison and Megan Doty, for what he called “a little fun. He admitted, however, things do get out of hand sometimes.
Authorities said races are held Friday and Saturday nights between midnight and 3:30 a.m., and according to some participants, it can be a very lucrative activity.
One street racer said a winning driver can get as much as $500 to $600 per race, racing between 75 and 100 races a night.
“Out here, anything goes,” Winfrey said. “I’ve been here six times — (Tracy) is a popular place.”
Authorities said their goal was to stop the illegal racing before someone was killed. Recently there has been a number of serious crashes in Tracy, but no fatalities.
“We’ve been so fortunate no one has been killed,” Rouse said.
Last Wednesday, a Sacramento man was sentenced to two years in state prison for killing his 16-year-old passenger during a street race in May 2002. He lost control of his Ford Mustang and hit a tree going almost 70 mph through North Sacramento.
Some parents received calls in the middle of the night to go to the business park and retrieve their vehicles or their children.
“She was supposed to be at a friend’s house playing pool,” said Shelly Sanchez, referring to her 17-year-old daughter. “We left San Jose to come to Tracy — a smaller community — and avoid the gangs, and she gets into this.”
Another mother who traveled from Antioch also expressed disappointment in her 17-year-old son’s judgment.
“He shouldn’t have been here watching this,” she said. “He was at the wrong place.”
In addition to the racing, officers said some participants perform a different type of dangerous activity known as “sideshows.” Driving in circles, drivers would spin doughnuts at high speeds inside a parking lot and burn rubber.
Officers said Saturday’s activities displayed some of the most reckless driving they’ve seen in a long time.
“It was crazy,” said Delta Regional Auto Theft Team Sgt. Joe Lapthorne, who was among those working undercover. “They packed in here faster and more than normal.”
After a few hours of waiting for their final court orders, officers slowly began to weed out their new impounds around 5 a.m.
As vehicles approached the Schulte Road exit, some were given the bad news on the spot, while others were spared.
Glen Davies of Brentwood said he wished he had heeded previous warnings to stay away.
“They got my plates and told me not to come back or they’d tow it,” he said. “I came back.”
For the most part, those involved were civil, but there were a few argumentative drivers in the bunch.
One young driver smashed his own pickup taillight after he was told his truck was on the impound list.
Those spared a 30-day impound were given a warning to stay away from Tracy.
“You know why we’re here,” said one Manteca officer to a driver. “We don’t want you here — don’t come back. If you do, we’ll take your car, too.”
As the sun began to rise in the east, officers were still going through the long line of vehicles with 10 to 15 tow trucks standing by.
At times there was a fever pitch to move impounds off the line and onto the back of a flatbed tow truck.
Authorities did make a couple of arrests on unrelated incidents, but the majority of those affected in the sting were those with impounded vehicles.
“The tow, storage and possible lien fees can bring the cost up to $1,100,” said CHP officer Bruce Marble.
CHP spokesman Ted Montez said they hoped their message was received. He said the biggest impact was likely when racers saw officers taking vehicles.
“We definitely hit a homerun tonight,” he said.
Authorities said vehicles on their list, but not in Tracy on Saturday will likely be tracked down at their owners’ homes.

That really sucks but it does give a bad name to those who race legally, I know you want that rush you get when you race but damn it can't wait till the legit races???

Either way though.

Sucks for you and down here in Texas stuff is still different and they still have their illegal races every week!

Since when is street racing a felony...
Last I checked 'racing on the highway' was a Class A Misdemeanor.

Just a felony in CA or what?

am I the only one that thinks the video might be inadmissable as evidence? This whole thing sounds kind of swastika; they blocked the road off and started towing cars? What exactly where you doing at that exact moment when they impounded your car? Trespassing perhaps at worst? I don't think they can video you and use it agains't you in court if you don't know. You could also use some sort of duress defense, that has worked in the past.
RASR (Ricers against Street Racing) is stupid. I bought my car to drive it, not look at it. People who say they never boot their car except at the track are either
a) really bad drivers
or;
b) very rich
I'm in Canada, so I'm not sure how **** law works, but I have a feeling there is a way you can get off it here.
They impounded your car for 30 days saying you were street racing, or they impounded your car for 30 days because they have a video of you street racing?
Either way couldn't you say that it wasn't you driving even? Then if they ask who it was use the 5th ammendment somehow?
