Well I'm close in getting my new project car. I use to own a 92 civic hatchback si with a JDM B16 SiRII swap and sold it about less than a year ago.

I'm going to be picking up a 1994 civic dx coupe with 170,000 miles on the original motor. I'm getting the car for $2,500, I always wanted a coupe and now I finally have it, do you think it was a good deal for that price? I test drove it the other day and it sounds like it needs some love in a few areas. My first concern it the motor, the car has been sitting for about a year the owner said and I want to eventually save enough money to do another b series swap but for now with gas prices so high I want to use the dx motor as a project for a rebuilt.

I have a spare dx block a friend gave to me so I have some extra parts just incase it's needed. This will be the first time that I would be tearing a motor apart and putting it back together, I've have plenty of other experience in other areas on installing (suspension, supercharger, bolt on's, ect) but this will be the first motor built up. I want to gather some usefull information from you guys before I start.

I dont want to spend too much of course on the rebuilt so I want to keep a budget. A friend of mine rebuilt his d16z6 and said it was around $300. He suggested that I get a good touque wrench and other parts that he use to rebuilt the motor where new bearings, micropolished the crank, new belt, and I think he used new rings. He also suggested getting the chilton manual for some step by step instructions.

So what are some good tips or resources to use for a first time built up?

Get the Helms manual and take your time. Get all new bearings and other wear items IMHO. If you're going to pull it apart, make sure you do it all man. No use having to take it right back apart.

IMHO you paid a little too much. I got the exact same car for $3500 from a dealership with 13x,xxx miles on the stock engine. The only thing it's need from me is new plugs and wire, a new dizzy cap and rotor and a couple grounds changed out. The engine is flawless except for the little (little little) bit of leaking around the valve cover. I'm sure that can be fixed with a new gasket, but why waste the time and money when I have a z6 head waiting to be put on. However, the coupe rocks! Enjoy your EJ2

I can reuse the rods and pistons can't I? Would I need to rehone it and get oversize piston rings? How should I go about that...

Well the motor runs fine, I just want to rebuilt it due to the fact I have the parts and would like to gain knowledge on a builting up a cheap d series.

The car is in overall good shape, just a little ticking from the valves and no smoke and most importantly the body is in good shape!

i think he got a good price on it if the engine is healthy.

on the other hand I think you got ripped. $3500 for 130k+ miles, and for a coupe. I like coupes but they don't usually get the prices hatches get. I wouldn't have paid that price for a hatch from a dealer. I know that's what dealers charge but it amazes me people pay that. But, if you're happy that's all that matters.

I'm not trying to be a dick at all, but with you being the "READ THE ENTIRE THREAD ****", you think I got ripped paying $1000 more than this guy for 40,000 less miles on the exact same car/engine? My car retails (KBB) at $4170 the way it was when I got it FROM A DEALERSHIP. I think you're thinking this guy bought a hatch, when, in fact, he also bought a coupe.

FUTURESi: did you buy private party or dealership? Also, I have an OEM wing w/ LED if you're interested.

yeah, i did read the whole thing. I know he got a coupe, as did you. $2500 would be a good deal for a hatch, I think. To me $2500 seems about right, maybe a tad high for a coupe. And for a 10 year old car (especially a honda) , there really isn't much difference between 90k and 130k. Especially for an extra grand. To me the fact that you got it from a dealer doesn't mean anything. I'd be very surprised if they did anything besides wash/wax it. They usually buy em at auction, check em out and do the bare minimum anyways. KBB retail is a good starting point but you have to be realistic. The used car market lately is in the dump. Cars are going for much less than what you would think. I'd take his deal any day over yours. Not trying to be a dick either, just my opinion.

I will be buying it from a private party, just waiting for the title to come in the mail so we can complete the deal. Thanks for the offer on the wing but I will be going wingless for now

 

Any other tips? Any suggestions on what kinda tq wrench to get?

 

first of all, What I would do is search around for a New tranny EX/ Si D16z6 or 96+ EX D16y8... Then you can score a z6 or Y8 head for fairly cheap when you dissamble the motor just make sure you clean everything and grease all bearing if your not gonna replace them I thin since you have a Spare B7 block there you should just clean that up and start building that, you can go to Ebay and Get OEM **** for super cheap...

 

I just piked up a 4 dr dx for $300 had a blown headgasket... so im gonna put my head from my other d15b1 i got layin in the garage... im also intrested to see what can be done...... so far ive come up with si tranny, crx si cam, y8 im....

Well I dont want to do a full build up of this motor, just wanna "refresh" it so to say. I guess I will shop around for parts here soon or maybe just see how long the dx motor will run until it dies then swap it.

 

Change of plans I just going to throw a d15b sohc vtec motor, very cheap

 

sounds like a better idea and probably cheaper
