My remote starter story
So here's the deal me and some friends were hangin at a friends house on Friday night. Somewhere in the middle of Old School one of my friends had to leave so the girl whose house I was at offered to move my car. Since she has driven my car numerous times I didn't even give it a second thought. Some time after midnight and after the movie was over the few of us that were still there decided to head out.
I figured while we were all saying goodbye i would let my car warm up. Not giving any thought to the fact that my car(which I had parked near the end of the driveway) now sat about four feet from the house, I pushed the start button on my remote. I then turned back to where about a half dozen of my friends were standing, however i turned back to my car a few seconds later after i recognized the sluggish sound of a car trying to start while in gear. My life was suddenly a blur as everything went into slow motion. Screams began to erupt around me as people realized what was happening. I reached for the stop button but it was too late. The emergency brake was no match for this V-tec on a mission, not to mention the fact that the back wheels were on ice and the front on dry pavement. The noise was sickening. A 3000 pound car being slammed into a garage door ripping studs, bending door track, tearing sheet rock, all in an instant.
We all stood there in stunned silence for about 4 seconds until my friend(who had driven the car last and whose parents own the house) burst out laughing. An immediate inspection found that the Toyota Solara parked in the garage had come within an inch of destruction. After that i decided to spend the night so i could work on the door in the morning. Luckily I had all my carpentry tools in my car and was able to fix most of the damage except for the door itself along with a piece of track and some sheet rock. Also my friends parents were not too concerned since they had a replacement door panel waiting to be put on.
Thank God no one was hurt and the damage on the car was confined to the bumper which already had markings of a previous encounter with a guide rail. All in all I definitely got lucky and i look forward to the day when somebody comes out with a neutral safety switch for standards.

similar thing happened to me >. mine drove into my garage >. destroyed the door and scratched the crap out of my hood >> i know exactly what you are talking about dude >. thank God no one got hurt >> its a scray thing watching the car drive off on its own >. be super careful not to leave it in gear tho man
good luck with the car
good luck with the car
dang dude that sucks, i would put a little sticky note on your dash that says "do not leave car in gear". haha j/k now you know to warn everyone not to leave it in gear if they move it or drive it. you should look into maybe wiring up something to keep it from starting if its in gear. check out the audio/video/security forum.
thats why you a. hook the blk wht wire to the e brake
b. use thoes security magnets from radio shack
and finally c. don't let some chick drive your pride and joy......
i've seen that happen to somany people and its still funny every time

dang, it came from the end of the driveway? must have been going at least kinda fast huh? but it's good to hear that little damage was done and no one got hurt. awesome story tho.

yes, do hook up some safety switch to the ebrake!
reminds me of when I started a friend's tacoma on a hot summer day to get some AC blowing while i was waiting for my bud to come back out from the Texaco with his ice cream. I held the " Clutch Start" switch or whatever it is and turned the key from the passenger seat. All of a sudden, the car starts lurching forward, goes about 20 feet and T-bones another truck in the parking lot!! The whole time the truck was moving i was frantically pulling levers and crap. I remember the windsheild wipers turning on as I slammed into the other truck!
Fortunatley my friend was cool about it, and nobody was hurt. I didn't get a ticket and everybody's trucks got fixed..

First of all that is why remote starter are not suppose to be on manual transmission cars. (Even-though I have one on my car) Second Clifford makes a remote start alarm that is made for stick shift cars. The way it works is before you turn the car off you have to press one of the buttons on the transmitter. This will allowed the car to keep running after you take the key out of the ignition switch. The car will continue to run until you leave the car and close all of the doors. This ensures that the car is out of gear when you left the car. After a few second, the car turns off and the alarm arms. If any of the doors are open after this process, the alarm will not let you to remote start it. If you want to remote start the car you will have to go through this process every time you leave your car.
this may sound REALLY DUMB.....but.......how can this happen in a stick???
if the car is left in first gear, and u remost start it, how can the car begin to move, being that the clutch isnt depressend, and it should stall out immediantly....i know nothing about how remote starters operate......
anybody wanna explain how this works??

they set it up so that basically it electronically bypasses the clutch... so it thinks its pushed in and then bam...it really isnt so bam...it moves forward. not to mention when you start up a honda it usually revs up to around 2000 so thats 2000 rpms in 1st gear.... wee ha!

In most cases the car just stalls out, however the starter turns the car over for a few seconds, in which time the car may at times be able to gain enough momentum to stay running. As was the case with mine where the back wheels were on ice so the E-brake had no effect. Also the remote unit knows if the car starts or not, so if it does not the starter waits 30 seconds and trys to start the car again. When this happens it tends to engage the starter for longer intervals giving the car more time to gain momentum. So as soon as the starter gets the engine up to about 600 rpms the car will stay running.
I hope that makes sense

thanks......i think i get it........i just think its wild (but believable) that the starting rev could overcome the mechanical "issues" of moving the car w/ a dperessed pressure plate.......
this happened to my old BMW. Except it was an auto. my dad left it in drive when he got out. then a few hours later he started it and she drove herself int a cement wall. there was only 10 or more feet to get momentum. Still it messed up the bumper. its gotta be kinda weird to go outside to get in your car and see it idling into a cement wall
