Talk me into an S2K..
I'm a trial user, I'm trying to get my posts up so I can start using IMs and everything. So in an attempt to get more posts, I'll open you guys up to my situation. I'm a college kid, don't have much money, can't afford a beater with insurance and all, but I'm in love with an s2k. Right now I'm driving a paid off 2003 1.8T with 28k on her, I'm commuting to college so I need to daily drive it, and I'm on full scholarship so I don't have to pay for school. I'm wondering if I sell my car for a decent bit, would it be a bad move on my part to buy an s2k? I know they aren't daily drivers but I would kill to have one....
Im in almost the same situation as you, have one year to go in college, I am planning to sell the 2 cars I have right now (civics) and buy a used s2k. It could be a daily driver if you be careful w/ it.
my s2000 is my daily driver and its the only car out of my previous 12 that have not given me one single problem with it in 1.5 years of ownership. my $1900 nissan maxima that has never let me down rolls all winter and when it rains. plus you claim the beater as your primary car, and the s2000 as a weekend car, and your ins rates could drop.
get the s2000 and enjoy the ride
get the s2000 and enjoy the ride
you live only once but get your situation sorted out first and don't make any moves to put yourself in a situation that you can't get out of. If your sponsored by your parents, go for it but remember that your parents paid for it and their money shouldn't feel any different than yours. If your on a scholorship, keep your grades up, graduate and get a job and then you'll be better off getting into debt/loan on a car when you wont be stressing to make monthly payments/insurance on it.

Yeah, but look at where the origional poster lives.....daily driver S2000 in New Jersey? I shudder to think the condition of the car after a winter....
The S is a great car, probably one of the greats in sports car (if not automotive) history, but easy to live with as a student or married person with kids? Probably not. However it all depends on your priorities...its probably the most fun you can have by yourself without touching yourself....

what kind of 1.8t are you driving man??
they put that engine in alot of cars.
but anyhoo, regaurdless of the car, if you can sell it for enuf cash to get an s2k,
it might not be a bad idea.
the 1.8t is a very potent motor,
but even with boltons and chip, it still might not be as fast as an s2k, and definetely not as fun.
you're not going to get a real sportscar, or rwd(well maybe awd if its an A4, but rwd is still more fun).
the s2k is a real sportscar, just remember that,
its made with performance in mind, not daily driveability(GTi's) or luxury(A4's) or to be a bitch basket(jetta)

hmm, i dont see why these guys would say not to use it as a daily driver.
the s2k is still a honda and perfectly reliable,
might not get as good mileage as a civic, but it aint half bad.
might not be that roomy though, but thats only if u care about that.
only reason I can c these guys sayin that is cuz they love their s2k's too much,
and want to keep that "exotic: only drive it when the suns out, and dont even think about putting alot of miles on it!!" image
NOT trying to talk **** or anything,
but remember u can pick up a used s2k for under 25grand,
nothign wrong with driving it every day.

hahaha i like it how you talk about it like its some insane race car that normal people wouldnt be able to drive. its just a car. i agree that the s2000 is a sick car but i dont think you have to be anymore careful than you would have to be with any other sports/performance car...

I drive my S2000 everyday and it has been that way for the past 2 years...
I live in Cali where the weather is great and i don't need a beater, the rain isn't a problem for the car, just as long as you're not trying to hit VTEC while the pavement is wet
If the weather isn't that great where you are from, it may not be a good idea. But, if you truely want one I don't see why you shouldn't buy one and enjoy the car EVERYDAY as i do!

Living in NJ, I don't think an S2k would be an ideal daily driver. I would definitely want a beater/daily driver if I were to also own an S2k. Keep that thought in mind...
Yes, notice how all those who say they drive the car yeat around live in the SUN BELT and probably never even SEEN snow in their can let alone drive the S in it.
I drove a dealership S2000 in the snow and its not pretty.....its fun for the first five minutes (if you are skilled) but after that, it becomes a REAL PAIN...

I've daily driven my s2k for the last year with no problems. You can manage it just fine as long as you don't have a job that requires moving big stuff on a regular basis.
That being said, it ain't my job to talk you into the car. Go drive one and see if you like it.

don't be hating on people because they chose to live in a sunny state. there's no law preventing you from moving
anyhow... i drive my S everyday, sun, rain, whatever. i have 34k on it and couldn't be happier with it. simply put, it's the best car i've ever owned, and i've owned quite a few, hah.
and i pull a consistent 25-26 mpg in the city, and about 33-36 on the highway. so don't let people tell you "gas mileage isnt good!!" because for a sports car, it really is.
and no, i don't baby my car.

daily driven 30 miles to work - one way...
daily socal traffic...
It was quite a change from my Type-R, but the ride is good, car is small, but it's totally worth it.

Listen to the above advice.
Imagine what you could do with the money that wouldn't go into the car. Backpacking through Europe for a summer (highly recommended). Healthy date fund. Upgraded wardrobe. HDTV. Sweet bachelor pad.
But if pimpin' a sports car is your priority, then by all means go for it. But I did all the above first because the above niceties were more important to me.
Also be careful about who you are seeking advice from. The WRS2K in me will say that most of these dudes that come on internet car boards are fanatics and would eat top ramen to sport the latest and greatest shiznit from JDM land. And a lot of these posters are not the most well-rounded people. Just take a look at meet pics and you'll see what I mean. Not exactly the beautiful crowd.
Sounds like you're ahead of the game.
Good luck!

Alex, there was honestly no 'HATE" intended...just trying to point out the obvious..
I had to move here from Pasadena because I draw cars for a living...but that doesnt mean I have to LIKE it here, ya know? (In fact I hate it) So take it as jealousy that I cant drive mine all year long....
Cool?

You know if you really are in love with the s2k, i would for sure sell off that 1.8T for an S. I sold off my 00' SI, put down 18k, and my payments are only around 200 a month. Trust me its so worth it. And as for a daily driver issue, its my first year in college and i drive almost 120miles a day with it (60miles 1 way) and no issues yet. But just dont jump into the situation where theres no money for gas, food, and the hardest thing to cover...insurance. OT but mine is almost 3900/year but that is with a previous wreckless driving when i was 16. (now 19)
S2K will definitely be a more performance oriented vehicle than the 1.8T but it's a hard car to live with day in and day out, especially if you don't have another car to drive around as an option. There's really no adequate storage space in the S2K and the interior is cramped, but yes, it's an awesome car to experience, just not as a daily in my opinion.

i didnt realize this untill it was too damn late...payments and the insurance are a bitch...is it worth it..hell yes...but i would rather have kept my gsr or integra RS w/ no major payments and just chill out w/ extra doe in the pocket..

In regards to all the theft talk, I must say that I disagree. I'm actually considering selling my type R for an S simply to avoid all the theft issues. Although there might be some cases of vandalism and theft, the rates are substantially lower than those associated with the R.
Basically, I would go ahead and buy the S2k, use it as a daily driver, and not worry about theft issues.
Good luck with your decision
