My lil story of the ls 5th gear swap :)
Hmm, well for Spring Break I played with my car to make it better and easier to drive back and forth to school.
It took me almost a year to find these gears and soulsurfer passed these on to me for a cool $40. (1-5 ls tranny main and counter shafts)
I learned about this swap through raene's post from a while back.
Here's a great how to.
Since his how to was good enough I'll only share some misc pics, frustrations, and a few suprises.
This was another good site to familiarize myself with tranny crap.
like i said nuther good site to familiarize yourself with tranny crap
my header heatshield has taken it up the butt quite a few times i see, and my ls gears waiting to be torn apart.

My breaker bar got stuck. Yes I know that's ghetto, but it was funny and it worked.

I went ahead and removed the depot lip and my mom utilized it for it's intended purpose.

Tiny garage, but big enough

Yeah, ladies back off...whatever

Dang, no more blang!

Since I'm poor I kept my clutch, looks good I guess, can't really tell.

Got that lil case on the floor finally, the air tools certainly made all of this 100000000 times easier/quicker.

This clip needs to be spread open so the case will open up.

Don't be skurred, it's just complex. Shifter forks on the other side. I guess that's a good lookin inside? Honda MTF

I didn't really bother to put the ls gears back together, since the shaft wouldn't have the 5th on it anymore.

J1 gears now chillin in my toolbox @ home, just in case I want to put them back in later.

The aftermath....I cleaned it all out, except the floor which has that huge stain now.

The end result: I aimed cam before I was driving and then just clicked it. Sorry since I didn't get it right @ 70, but for me it's 31-3200 rpm.

Ah glad to see it all back together again. Notice my jdm battery straps

No more blang blang

This took about three days, but not workin all day, mainly a few hours a night. Just thought I'd share my lil fun time in the garage.
PS: And intersting thing we discovered. When we reassembled the gears, before we shut the case, we double checked that everything was rollin smoothly and it wasn't. It turned out the 5th gear syncro didn't sit down just right and got bent a lil bit. THankfully the ls 5th syncro fit just fine.
The shifter forks don't need to be removed, but they do need to be pulled up some to swap the gears. The reverse idler bar we unbolted, but I don't know if we needed to. I used loctite red on the reverse idler bar, and the shifter--to--forks bolts during reassembly. Hondabond is worht the money so don't cheap out and buy cheapo tranny goop bond crap. I had a BMW mechanic help me and they use Hondabond in their shop.
Phew, time for somethin else besides H-tech
Hope that helps someone.
PSS: The ls 4th and J1 5th were barely different in diameter. I figure it would only drop maybe 1 or 200 rpm...just kinda funny.
Power is fine in 5th on the highway. I took a 4 hour trip back to school and now I have to watch my speed.
With the old 5th the motor was so high strung it let you know when to slow down. On the way back someone in a curvy bodystyle mustang svt convertible, w/just bought tag on it couldn't keep up with me....till I hit the 5th gear. But no one needs to be hauling **** in 5th anyways.

Welcome to the world of trannys! .....lol I am elbow deep in mercon V all day long myself(tranny tech at a ford dealership)
I love transmissions, and they jsut take some ***** to take them apart, manuals are easy and anyone who cant do atleast there clutch with the right tools shouldnt work on there car. Manual trans are a blast, strictly mechanical operation. Autos can get your goose somtimes but after you've been in enough it all becomes the same!
Good job and good write up pal.

Id like to put my old dx final drive into my si tranny god damn that thing is aggressive and yeah if a semi is next to me on the interstate I can hit the throttle and really blip by rpetty quickly...but otherwise in the slow lane at 65-75(my speeds on highway/insterstate) Im at like a constant 3 grand sometimes more it sux, and you can just hear the engine groaning....lol

Yes, but that was the whole point of it. It's not horrible though.<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by Kasper-EF8 »</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">Im at like a constant 3 grand sometimes more it sux, and you can just hear the engine groaning....lol</TD></TR></TABLE>
U wuss! Maybe 3-4k doesn't bother me b/c I have a really quiet exhaust. You might also, I dunno.
I remember my dx tranny 4k rpm was at 105 mph!

Dude maybe its just me but in a stock si doing 70-75 3500 to 4000 rpm is alot. I dont know I could understand it if I swapped motors and trannys but if im not racing(which Is very rare for me other then autocross) then I dont like having my stock engine and tranny revving that high its a little TOO agressive for me.
oh well....
and My dx in my 90 crx sat at about 2500 doing 70 on the highway.....you'd be in 4th doin about 55-60 at about 3500 and you downshift to 5th and its like a different car it would dip all the way down to about 2000 - 2500.
