Default 97/98 civic, factory paint problems

anyone have problems with the paint on the hood cracking? my 97 has it pretty bad, but it can only be seen after I wax it. since the wax gets into the cracks and will not buff out.

I thought it was just me, but I saw a post on another board from a guy with the same problem.

my guess is that the hood paint cracks from engine heat.

also, when I first bought the car I layed a wake board against it and when I picked up the board it left a scuff mark on the paint, that I have never been able to buff out.

I have heard from a few people that the paint on 97's was pretty bad.

anyone else with this problem?

Are you the original owner of the car? Maybe it was repainted by the previous owner?

yup, I am the original owner. I bought it in 96.

If I had waxed it recently I would get some pics.

it looks like swirl marks but its all over.

I've never had any problems with the paint on my 97 hatch. 160k and still as red as the day it was sold.

WTF. I have never seen that before. I woulda figured my paint would be fading and cracked because of michigan winter and all the salt but that looks REALLY BAD.

yeah, its only on the hood. and it only appears after I wax it.

looks like poo when the entire car looks like a mirror, but the hood has white cracks all over it.

I have tried just about everything but they are deep enough to not buff out.

That sucks. How many miles are on the car? Are they mostly highyway? City?

mine is about 120,000 miles. with mostly freeway.

I did take it to the uk for about 3 years. that was almost entirely back roads and city driving.

I have noticed the problem about 4 years ago.

since you are the original owner of the car, i would take it to the dealer and ask them about it, like if there is any kind of long-term warranty for the paint. it wouldnt hurt to ask.
my ex's mom got here van repainted for free last year, there was a recall on the paint they used that year, and the car was over 10 yrs old but they still honored the recall

I have a 96 FBP hatchback. The clearcoat on the hood has thousands on small short white cracks. I tried waxing and buffing to no avail. Also, the roof has three spots where the paint has faded to white. Car was never repainted.
