most times, junk yard wear-items are in worse shape than what you have.

Unless you found a 90-93 with really low miles in good shape, I'd go autozone / local parts warehouse. Fyi, many times the parts-warehouses have superior quality parts....ask!

Before you do this though, check part# compatibility with other years/models....see if a 97 would fit? I don't know.....but that might be a good route for newer/less miles than limiting yourself to (the obvious) junkyard 90-93.

Good luck.

check http://www.switchboard.com for listings....query "automotive part warehouse" or similar.

your looking for a major parts warehouse...not an autozone. These will be mom & pop owned places that have been around for years...they [can] get things Autozone can't.

For instance, i got canadian built rotors for my rx7...autozone (use to be someelse before they merged) only had mexico/thai/china crap at the time.

One of the most important things you can do is ASK where something has been rebuilt. It matters alot when it comes to quality control. Absolutely avoid anything remanned in Thailand.

It's a pain at home but I think everything is a pain at home.

What wrong with your rack? I'm parting out a '92 EX but the right hand inner tie rod is bent so it probably won't be much help.

Thanks, but I need an entire rack, no bends. I went to get an oil change and the guy at the shop told me my oil pan gasket was leaking and so was my rack and pinion. Made since, I have 206,000 miles on the car. So I'm just trying to find the best way to do this, since I dont have $700 to get them both replaced. Although it looks as though I'll have to throw about $200 in parts anyways, the labor is what I dont want to pay for. I get this horrible feeling when I take a car to the shop that they ruin other things while they fix what's wrong.

Yeah, that's what happens. They don't even use new parts. For oil changes, they import
used Mexican oil and wipe off your oil filter to make it look new. That's why you always need to ask for your old parts back. If you don't, they'll use your old parts to fix another customer's car...

That's a really horrible thing to say. I only have one shop I trust, and that's the one I didn't go to this time. Tried to save a buck on the oil change, while we have no room to do it in our garage. So out of all the shops in Dallas, I went to the one down the street and could have gotten screwed. At least it wasn't a Jiffy Lube or something.

BTW anyone know of good Dallas shops?

Is there anything wrong with running the car with a bad rack and pinion? My mechanic told me the boot was ripped a while back, but it wasn't a rush or big deal. He said just wait til i save enough money for the repair. My car has about 205k on it. How bad is it to drive while it has a leak? I only ask cause i havent really noticed anything wrong with my steering or anything...

Other than the fact that it might fail or leak fluid.... no

I havent noticed anything either, so maybe it's just a small leak or no leak at all. I still haven't checked to make sure it is leaking myself. Like getting under the car and making sure I see fluid or residue.

you might not have to replace the whole rack. it could be just an o ring. but replacing the rack is very easy in theory. just take out bolts disconnect lines and reassemble but it can get tricky. but check on the oring. it might just be an oring that got damadged due to power steering fluid. maybe even try a stop leak.

Question is if I get a steering rack from the junkyard and the steering wheel is turned On the car from the junkyard will that mess with the alignment on my car when I put it on.
