I had that after the CV boots started to crack/fail.

They spin the grease out from the crevices when your driving, then dirt sticks to it and it looks like that.

Check to see if the CV boots near the grease is cracked or torn. Both of my inner CV boots are spraying out grease like that, but neither of the boots are cracked, which means it's leaking out from around the clamps that holds the boot in place. I'm not sure if I should change the entire axles or attempt to just replace the boots, since the joints haven't really been exposed to dirt or anything yet.

Just removing the large clamp, adding grease and reinstalling a new band should be good if the boot isn't cracked.

This happens when the grease in the inner c/v starts to liquefy with age, I recommend replacing the boot and the grease, if you let it go it will wear out the inner c/v joint which will cause a vibration on acceleration.

Do I actually have to take the joint apart to replace the whole boot? These are the original axles as far as I know, with 160K miles on them.

Are any special tools required to install and tighten new clamps for the boot?

It depends on the style of band you get. There are alot of different kinds. Most of them can be installed with regular tools.

Kind of expensive though, for a simple repair.

I paid $150.00 for both axles. It is just alot easier to do. Plus you get all new boots. Just a thought.

I had the same issue that Patrick described. no cracks, but spitting grease out slowly. I just swapped both axles out for about $150 each. I have no regrets, I didn't do it mainly for the grease... I had some knocking noises and thought it was my axles... turned out to be my motor mounts.

Since you have 160k on your axles and I'm pretty sure you are lowered quite a bit, I would just get some remanufactured axles. I'm sure those originals have some kinda of play in them. Taking apart and repacking axles isn't fun at all. The grease gets EVERYWHERE. Remanu's from most auto parts places are $75 after core exchange.

Also you have to take this in consideration, if your boot it broke you might barely have any grease in there, unless you caught this right away you have been driving like this the parts inside might be running close to dry causing over heating. So even if you just replace the boot, the parts inside might be on there way out.

I agree. Just go to Autozone and get a replacement axle for about $60/side. You just have to give them your core as a replacement. These axles also have a lifetime warranty.

Vs. $10 for a band and some grease. And about ten minutes of time.

well it would be best if i replace the axles right?? i'm going to have this car for a long time so i guess it would be best if i replace the axles and not have to worry about this problem coming up again for a long time. I think it's been leaking for about 1-2 months now??

Thats a lot of grease dude, I dont think there was much more than that when the entire boot was ripped in half

Autozone axles are pure ****, try CarQuest.

I just felt that it was a much easier idea to go and buy new everything. Chances are that if one side goes, the other is soon to follow.

I purchased mine from NAPA, they seem to be just fine. Plus my car is slammed.

well i'm a little low on cash. when i changed my tranny oil, i wiped off all of that grease and i went under to check again today and more grease came out. didn't get a chance to see if my cv boots were cracked but i'll look tomorrow morning. I'm prolly gonna change out the cv boots instead of changing the whole axle.

Sometimes they aren't just cracked. I guess they have a tendancy to leak out of the side. Especially if they are old boots with a lowered car.
