FYI there's this great tool on the top right hand of the honda-tech site called search he he.

Anyways your only choice is an H-22 unless you can get some one to custom fabricate mounts for you and have a lot of extra cash.

::EDIT:: Or the h-23

I thought for the earlier model preludes you could put B-series motors in. I don't know if I am correct or not, but it looks like you thouhgt he said 1998, but he said 88.

No I was talking about the 3rd gen (1988-91) Prelude Si I own one from the same generation. Also the other B-series motors are very expensive and difficult to put in since no one has made mounts or told all the work involved.

The earlier models like 87 and earlier you can easily put b-seies in them just not the 88's and up.

Not really because our B-20, B-21's have many problems. And a REEEEALLY Crappy head.

I don't know if it is a bolt up but it has been done:
If you take a B20Z out of a 99 CRV and put a b16 or ITR head on it you'll end up with a stock 10:1 CR and about 150 HP at the CRV redline (6800). but people take it a lot higher:

Here are a few other examples: Puts a few H22's to shame for the amount of work they have... and it would be really sweet in an older prelude:
http://www.importreview.com/d_2.0.html

Or swap in the CRV B20B keep it stock and boost it. it has steel sleeves so you could upgrade the rods and pistons and easily get a couple of hundred hp.

yea but for 500 bucks to have a brand new b20 sounds apealing to me... and 30k miles or less... plus you can get them to run real clean if taken proper care of... so i think what I personaly am going to do is buy a JDM b20... swap and rebuild my old b20a5 from top to bottom slowly..

theres a jdm b20a that came in both the 2nd gen prelude/3rd gen accord 140hp 137tq .. the motor is cake to find.. but the tranny.. have fun.. most places to find it are in canada.. the motor that is..

Those motors aren't anything like the b20a5 or b21a1 they are completely different monsters all together. They are nice little buggers i've heard from some 2nd genners. The b20a5 and b21a1 are NOT the same mounts as all the other b's they are the Bastard B's

bang for the buck- JDM b20.

or a rebuilt kit.

or a tank of NOS.

best bang- H22 (built and turbo'ed at 20 psi of course)

b21 (or b20) turbo on stock internals @7psi. (190-210 whp)

I believe he was referring to the old "B21 tuneup" from the hp.com site. After the author concluded that the car doesn't respond to NA upgrades, he posted his dyno from his boosted car. It was something like 200 hp from 7psi untuned.

His wasn't the only one I ever saw, either. They really do respond well to FI. Probably in part because of the mild compression and no overlap in the cam timing.

H23 is a "4 banger" same as the H22, just without VTEC and a bit more torque..Same block, even...

If you want a bolt up affair then you will have to stick to a JDM prelude engine (I can't remember is it B20A?).

If you want a h22, h23, B16A, B17, B18Cx B20B or a B20Z or a JDM equivalent that was never intended for the 88 Prelude then you will have to custom fabricate some mounts and worry about wiring harnesses. If you can't afford it or don't have the time to mod, stick to the basic Prelude engine. Or buy a new car that is more popular/easy to mod.
