Default need help understanding ems/ecu

I dont really know much about ems/ecu's. I am going to have a stock h22a w/turbo kit (dont know which one is best/fastest spooling for the motor), and i hear a lot about ems's...engine managment systems right? Anyway. Is it like a replacement ecu? Or is it an add on tuning device? Can you program it with a laptop? Why does it cost so much? Could i just go to a shop and have them tune my ecu? thanks again for the help.

i have the AEM EMS.
yes it is a direct replacement for ur factory ecu. so u'll have to take the stock ecu out and put the AEM EMS in it's place.
yes u can tune it with a laptop, thats how i'm doing mine. or u can take it to a AEM EMS tuner and have them tune it for u, but expect to get raped, cuz that **** is expensive, but at the same time u pay for what u get, and them guys can get every lil power out of it, but then again, at the same time, them guys also blow enignes up too. it's a pretty easy thing, just gotta apply urself, and in time it'll come to u. AEM provides u w/ the base maps so u can drive ur car, but not to be driven hard tho untill u do some tuning.
it cost alot because it is infinitely programable. all engine management systmes are expensive, but IMO AEM EMS is a direct plug and play affair.
my car is a 99 accord with a drag kit t3/t4 turbo kit. for now stock injectors and running the 12:1 FMU untill i get my RC550cc, and 3BAR map sensor. right now, i am getting better gas mileage then i did without the AEM EMS, i haven't seen 100 miles to a 1/4 of a tank in a long time! the ignition maps they provide are good, just gotta do some automapping for the fuel map. my air/fuel ratios are in the 14.7 range in vacuum, and 12:1 in boost. everything is safe and smooth. i got mine for $1,200 shipped, but that was with a AEM wideband and both of em were slightly used. u'll need the wideband if u plan on tuning urself. u may also want a EGT gauge to make sure u dont get to them temps that'll melt ur stock pistons, but not necessary if u dont plan on pushing things. i plan on pushing 12-15 psi when i get my injectors in. we'll see how things go. and this is on a stock F23 block!

F series engines have forged piston sleeves, so they can take a hell of alot of abuse.....H series are some sort of alloy (i believe???, but i know theyre not forged).....in addition the H series run a higher compression (which means more power for NA applications)....so ull need a thicker headgasket as well...IMO, turbo H22 is just not worth it, cause theres SOO much work invloved...but thats just IMO, its perfect for some people who always need something to work on ....best of luck to you
