So what exaclty is the function of the type R wing...besides looks?
So i was just curious...does anyone know what the function of the type R rear wing as well as the front lip? the front lip adds downforce right? so does the car go fast enough for this to be a factor?
same with the mugen wing?
i heard someone on here say that rear wings really don't help front wheel drive cars and don't help with racing on road courses

the ITR wing and the MUGEN wing provides a downforce for the ITR at high speeds. I dont know the percentage or specs but the wing does make a difference according to the testimonies of people out there.
I read that the ITR wing gives no downforce. I don't see why a wing with downforce would be pointless on a front wheel drive?
Even if it gave downforce in the back, it's not like it would give any at the speed one launches at. When you get to the speeds that it would give downforce on I don't think it wouldn't make the front wheels loose traction.. I think. Please correct me if i'm wrong
Edit: Guess I'm wrong about the ITR wing giving now downforce

Its more looks, but does have some minor performance benefits.
However, I always thought Integras with no wing, or with the GSR wing looked HORRIBLE.

Yup. Downforce away from the drivewheels isnt benefical to most front wheel drive cars. Its basically for looks.
This sounds like something straight up and out from IGNORANT - not ALL owners from the Supraforums....
just because you've seen some triple biplane double decker SR-71 blackbird wing on the back of some queer Civic on the Fast & Foolish doesn't mean a rear wing on an FF car serves no purpose....
have you ever consider because there is so much weight on the front wheels that the rear end gets really light at high speeds?? How could this be dangerous? I urge you take your wingless FF car to circuit racing then since trying an experiment like this on the street could kill somebody....

the rear wing is functional, i read it in a mag or on acuras site. Its only functional after a certain speed, I believe it said after 65mph< i could be wrong.
Someone put this in a FAQ. According to Honda material, the aerodynamics package (the wing is one part of this package) helps reduce lift by 30% and drag by 1%. As it has been pointed out by others, the wing does help at high speed in keeping the rear planted. Granted, you're never going to use it in daily driving.
R748 said it, 30% less upward lift at higher speeds. This is combined between the front lip and rear spoiler. I'm know this was said already but I wanna feel just as smart as you guys :D
sorry...didn't read your post...at least we've got our facts right!
Aftermarket wings have better affectness at lower speeds.....wingless is faster because there's less drag, but not very good on turns..

That's what I was thinking, angel. I was wondering why a wing would be needed on a rear wheel drive car and not a front, that didn't really make sense to me

Had a bad day....but certainly no excuse for the rampage.....!
Cheers guys..
keep the comments up...
lol i hate when people post like this but try doing to search button first lol there have been many discussions and arguements on this subject!!!!!!!!!!
Other than aerodynamics, it's sometimes used for towing, blocking the headlights of trucks, obstructing rear view of police authorities, provides a firm handle for opening/closing the trunk, and countless other uses...
I heard that at high speeds, it deflects wind from the antenna allowing for clearer radio reception

What some people don't realise, is that cars are fundementaly shaped like aircraft wings, in front to rear cross section. At high speeds a low pressure area forms at the rear of the vehicle, above the hatch. This low pressure area is what contributes to the rear feeling "light", as the car lifts up to fill it. A wing on the back can counter act this lifting force, to a degree, adding traction and stability.
try going 140 w/o the wing and try it with the wing you'll feel the backend get loose when doing turns w/o the wing trust me i use to freeway race a lot in my crx and i could feel my backend get really loose but now i have a mugen spoiler but i haven't put it on yet but i'll tell you guys if it really works or not!
According to have i've read before, the ITR wing and lip combo along with the lack of side moldings causes 1% less drag, 30% less lift, and changes the downforce on the car to be more biased to the front end (the lip contributes to this mostly) compared to the GSR. Reason for downforce to be biased to the front if i remember correctly if for traction and steering enhancement at high speeds, while the GSR has downforce in the rear to keep the tail planted better. Granted, the ITR may very well have more downforce in the rear compared to the GSR, but the bias in the GSR is to the rear, while the ITR is to the front (via material i read).
Drag does not equal downforce, but downforce will almost always equal drag dependant on speed. Those Formula cars use different wings depending on the type of course...a big fast course with wide turns they will use wings to minimize drag and give downforce at high speeds....but these are not effective around a tight roadcourse because speeds arent that high, so they utilize the wings that give downforce at lower speeds....if they use the "low speed" wings on a high speed course, the drag will be a hinderance.
IMO the wing/lip do perform a function, but daily driving you wont notice it.....on a road course....im sure you will.

By far the funniest spoiler rant I have EVER heard.
mugen wing + underbody spolier
-sidenote- i read that the apexi TT drag integra
was nearly destroyed because it lost control and
that loss of control had something to do with lack
of downforce.

The rear wing does reduce lift. The only reason for taken it off is for ungrade wing so you can get the down foce at lower speeds..or if you dragging then it probably wouldn't help you it just depends oh what type of speed your running and ablitity of the driver.
I've seen some drivers get way loose on road course after they take off there rear wings or planes to get faster pole time. The bad thing is the car is faster but stablity is greatly reduced. If your not a good driver I wouldn't try this because it may catch you very quick and unexpeected like.
Most fwd OEM spoiler do not produce down force until 60mph is hit and exceeded. When you deal with mid engine and rear engine cars like Porsches there retractible spoiler do not deploy until 70mph mostly do to the engine siting in the rear of the car giving it plenty of weight back there..so it doesn't need help until it reaches higher rates of speeds. The VW turbo Beatle wing foil doesn't deploy until around 70mph even though it's front engine but because of it's shape and wheel base plays a different roll in this type car.
As for not using this on daily bases. Unless you live in big congested city is probably the only reason of not getting higher rates of speed. Normally there is only 4 roads here were restricted to 45-55mph speed zones. But on avg. on the interstate most people travel 80-90mph. Even state troopers will drive along with traffic at this speed. The only bad thing people here can't seem to drive in the rain or icy conditions..they tend to want to drive 70mph in these conditions..which causes accidents. Alot highways and county roads you can do around 70mph and never see a cop..maybe 6-8months out of the yr. Only in some places around the malls will you see the police and then just use your V1 to keep you in check.
Also places where I know they do speeds over 130mph on they will say on the news ahead of the time they will be on this road begining this date and ending on this date..so it's not like they don't tell people ahead of time. Recently two vipers, 355, and lamborghini diablo where doing around 180mph on that road..and the police didn't even chase them because they don't have anything to catch them. I think the record was someone doing 200mph on that road..but it's interstate road thats straight line for around 10miles...and very few places for cops to park there cars..reason they only do air patrols there..because most do over 150mph there.
