Default Anti-Theft Devices

Hi, I keep reading about cars getting lost and I was wondering if they are not issued with an immobilizer or if the immobilizer can be circumvented somehow.

I thought my vehicle could not be taken since it will not start-up unless my key with that immobilizer chip is in the ignition. I furthermore thought, that you can't short it to drive off without the owner's permission. The only way my car could be removed from it's parking spot were if you'd use a tow truck and lifted the car.

Am I all wrong about my only security measure or don't you have that?

sure your immobilizer will stop them from driving off in your car.

But if they want it, they'll just use a flatbed.

sure, but that means the immobilzer does work and that it does take a flatbed to remove vehicle. But doesn't a flatbed indicate theft big style and not just your usual small time criminal?

I guess we here in Europe need to mostly worry about Eastern European car theft traffic - they cut your babies up and take them accross as salvage ....

Still glad to know immobilizer does work.

If they want your car badly enough they will take it.

well, yes that might be so .... but as we figured out, they need a flatbed and there aren't that many around over here. And if there was a intact car on a flatbed with a polish license plate, they'd surely get stopped.

Nobody steals Honda's anyhow :-) They go for the BMWs and Mercedes, Porsches and the like .... VWs and Opels are pretty high up on the list but not Japanese Cars ...

The immobilizer chip can be circumvented, just like all other theft measures. It's a little more difficult to do than a standard starter cut relay, but it's not perfect, and a pro can get around it in a lot less time than you'd think. If you're driving a DX or LX, and are worried about theft, you should seriously consider a good alarm. The key to theft prevention is layers to slow the theif down or have them give up. If you're only relying on the key chip, than you're not very protected.

Oh thank you. Not to help anyone turn criminal, but if you know how this can be circumvented, I'd appreciate knowing. PM me for that.

I'had been wondering about the alarm but will see .... Alarm could quickly be shut down, couldn't it? Pop the hood an pull the wires? Well, what alarm system would you recommend for naiv people like me?

that sounds to good to be true,
but it has been said almost everyday here on honda-tech. IF THEY WANT YOUR CAR BAD ENOUGH THEY WILL TAKE IT.

there are certain things you can do to prevent it.
-i park in a parking garage, with only 8ft ceilings. (no tow trucks can fit)
-alarm with hidden brain
-autoloc
-removable steering wheel
-kill switche(s)
-turn your wheels all the way to one side

there are also a few other tricks up my sleeve

I gues the thing I would recomend is to have more than one security system. For example, fuel cut off switch, allarm, starter kill, immobilizer, etc. That way you don't base yourself on only one security system. 98ctr

another good devices, is that lock you put over your clutch, so they cant start the car or change gears. Sure someone with a flat bed can still steal it.. but its another prevention..Another good one is pulling your ecu

As far as I know, all Civics made before 2001 did not have an immobilizer.

Your EP3 has an immobilizer that requires the chipped ignition key, but our pre-2001 Civics do not.

Also, I believe the theives have found ways around the immobilizers nowadays. Electronic anti-theft devices don't seem to last on the market very long before theives find a way around them.

And then there is the ultimate form of theft - a tow truck.

If the theives want your car bad enough, they're going to take it. You can use multiple anti-theft devices together to slow them down though, and to ward off lazy/noob thieves and joyriders.

Hi there,

as far as I know the civics beginning 96 were issued with immobilizer (but there must be some without it) But all 96 EKs I know came with immobilizer. Did the EK hatches in the US come with three three point-belts in the US?

I know the USDM EP3 even has seat airbags - the ctr surely doesn't.

What exactly is this strange device shown above?

its a wheel lock. you put it over your wheel so the car can not move. its inconvenient if you ask me. 98ctr

generally in the EU, they take car theft more seriously. no civics in the states prior to 01 had immobilizers. immobilizers started in 97 with the prelude, 98 with the accord, then finally the 01 civic. key chip immobilizers have been standard equipment on car in the EU for years now. my guess is that they wanted to keep the cost of the cars down in the us..

btw, if you add a back up battery siren, these are the best security systems on the market:
http://clifford.com/g5/sec/default.asp

coded valet switches, and stater kill AND ignition kill still remain active if the brain is pulled
