Default LS/Vtec questions....

Just wondering... i was considering putting 403 cams on my ls engine. Now alot of people say that i should just swap a b16a2 head on there and when i have money down the future build the bottom end too have better reving potential.I was thinking would it be ok too put the b16 head on the bottom ls if im only gonna rev too 7k.Would it make around the same power or even better than the 403's on the ls head? They make around 145-155 with bolt on's.

when building a lsvtec the min and i mean the absolute least that should be done should be vtec oil pump, arp rod bolts, and b16 pistons. then you can save your money and build the head later.
i think ls vtec is the way to go. non vtec all motor can only go so far when compared to a vtec motor

ya see the thing is i really cant afford too take apart the bottom end.The head isnt really a problem,i could do that within a day or week end....later on i want too bore out the block and build it properly. But this is about a year or two down the road.If the si head on stock ls bottom end with bolt ons makes around 160 hp or so,thats good for me.

If you can't afford to build the bottom end, then you shouldn't even be considering an LS/VTEC setup right now. Even with the Crower 403 cams, it would be smart to install higher compression pistons (P30 maybe) in order to take full advantage of the cams. If I were you, I'd do nothing right now and save up some more money.

i have a 91 ls vtec and i was in the same predicament and i was given the same info. i went ahead and did the ls vtec and i am super happy i did i dont even run headers yet and i have already broke off a 2000 si with headers intake stage 2 clutch short shifter and full cat-less gready exhaust and i am running bone sotk with only intake, i have also taken like a 96 mustang and a 21st aniversary gti 1.8t
i recomend that you go ls vtec

I think u should go with Ls Vtec it the only way to go. I right now have a Ls like u but im going Vtec in a few week. I was going to get a B16 head but there alot of ppl that say, that i should get a GSR head becaues u get the same horsepower as the B16 but u get more torque. So i going to put a GSR head for my Ls.

If u keep in touch maybe i can tell u what happen when i put my on.
My aim is Iceman3743 or Email at Icemagic743@yahoo.com

b16 head got better air flow then a gsr head, smaller engine has to breath better to produce 20 hp less then a b18 and b18 dont got more torque. stroke determines torque

cause Torque = F*R*sin(x)

but the flow thing is debateable, and can be changed easily

well i have never heard that more torque is made with a gsr head....im gonna go the b16a2 route. If it correctly placed on the stock bottom end it should be ok.As far as beating 2000 si's... you should be able too be around the same speed as a si with i/h/e.I know many people in an ls that would beat them or stay with them in the quarter.

Ya i think im going too have a si tranny first. How much would this improve the 1/4 time?Think half a second or so?Then maybe ill just throw the stock head on there without bottom end build up.
