I just bought a 92 Si. The next day after I bought it it started overheating. So I turn on the heater and the temp went back down. I got it home and started looking over everything. I noticed that the fan does come on and there is sludge in the coolant reservoir. Oil maybe. There was no smoke when it was overheating. Do you think the head gasket went bad? The temp was going up when I was driving up a steep hill.

it could be your that you have air in your coolant system or bad thermostat.... you said that the reservoir got some sludge? you need to check it, and check your oil too.

 

was your car cold (temp. wise) while you were driving up the hill? if so you to let the car warm up first before you drive it. that was happening to me and thats all i did.

Could definately be a headgasket, but it could also be as mentioned above a thermostat problem or some such..

As for oil in your coolant resevoir i sure as hell hope not... I don't even see how that could be possible. Probobly just needs a good flushing.

Before you do anything drastic, try doing a complete fluids flush on the car, clean up the engine bay all nice, and then check for leaks and things like that.. Maybe do a compression and leak down test just to be sure.

flush the coolant system good, run strait water through it with a hose, all through the block. drain it again, do it a few times, then fill it up. Check your thermo switch too.

 

Replace thermostat, Flush Coolant. To see if you have a blown headgasket open you oil filler cap and look in it if theres milky **** it could be blown. or compression test that motor, anywho flush the coolant and change that stat

 

also pull out your dipstick and see if the oil is foamy on it, also see if you car is using coolant(aka. getting into the motor) if your headgasket is blown your coolant system will smell kinda like motor oil and yor oil will have some milky **** in there. you only have to remove two 10mm bolts to pull your thermostat out. i would jsut take it completely out and run your car like that and see how it goes.

 

check oil and change
clean sludge out of resivoir
flush entire coolant system
re fill coolant system
bleed coolant system
take if for a drive

FYI the temp on the temp guage has to be in red for a while for it to do any kinda of damage

 

If there is oil in the coolant, it's most likely that the headgasket is blown.
