Default ZC wont start

I have a 1990 CRX SI. I just swapped the stock d16 out and put a DOHC ZC into it but it wont start. There was one plug on the engine wiring harness that I did not use. I think it was yellow, and black or something like that. Anyways the problem is that it wont start. When you turn the key to the start position it just like pops. Like somethings grounding out that isnt suppose to but I checked and double checked all grounds. The starter doesnt even try to crank the motor. I was thinking coil or starter. Any ideas would greatly help. Thanks alot,
-Nick

What do you mean by a pop when you try to start it? Explain a bit more.

Does the fuel pump turn on?

It probably isn't the coil, because the engine would still crank if the coil was bad.

Check the starter and wiring.

I dont know how to explain it more. When you turn the key it pops. Like when somethings sparks like the battery when your connecting the pos after the neg is connected. Sounds like that. People keep telling me grounds grounds but I checked every ground a million times. I even made a bigger ground for my starter thinking it was that. It just pops once not continiously. Any imput would be great!
Thanx,
-Nick

is the starter good? if you dont know then take it off and take it to auto zone or advance.... it might be shorted out.... i worked there for a while.... they will do that and i have seen them catch fire on my work bench at work!.... it only takes 2 min. to pull off and 30 sec. to test..... rule it out at least

You have a short.

The way to find this is to stick your head under the hood and have someone crank it. Identify where the pop is occuring. You may want to do this a night since you might see a spark jump somewhere.

Is it the starter that is smoking or something aroung there?

The pop you hear, is this closer to a click sound or a pop sound?

I am thinking an open circuit. The smoke may be coming from a blown fusible link near the starter. The connector you mentionned that you did not plug in, on what was it plugged on the old engine? That may have something to do with it. Hard to tell from here though....

make sure you're battery is good. and the terminals are tight. once again make sure the starter connections are correct.

if there isnt enough power (amperage) the starter wont spin.
