Is there anything in the VIN number that tells you if an RSX is an S or not? thanks.

You can tell buy looking at the intake manifold. Black is a base model, and silver is a Type-S. Or just look at the interrior, and make sure it's leather. The VIN should tell you what trim it is, but I have no idea how to read it.

IDing the body or just the engine. If it's just the engine look down under the intake manifold, near where the block meets the tranny, see a small flat rectangular area on there and make sure it says "K20a2" on there for the Type S, "K20a3" for the base. If it's the body, a leather interior is a good indication of a Type S, also if the factory side skirts are painted the same color as the body it's the Type S, the base models side skirts are all like a matte black color. Any part in particular you looking for in distinguishing the difference? Sorry about the not knowing how to distinguish the VIN though.

the VIN does tell wether it is a Type-S or not.I'm not sure what part of the VIN it is though. You can run the VIN through carfax and see wether it is a base or a Type-S for free.

why don't you just check the tach... for 7800 redline...

also the type-s has a stock rear lower tie bar.. the base doesn't... also the base doesn't have a front strut tower bar... aka the bolts that come up from the strut tower for stock mounting points... and the type-s front strut tower bar has stock mounting points to the firewall as well..

alrite... here is the story. My girlfriend's family owns a garage that buys and sells used cars as well... they go to an auction near harrisburg and I was looking on the website and saw a 2002 RSX with like 40000 miles... and since the bidding is relatively cheap usually for cars that are in excellent shape... I figured I might go down sometime and check it out if there is an S there ever... and there was one on the site so I wanted to see how I could tell if it is an S without actually looking at the car first. I know all that about the difference in appearance between a type S and a base RSX. But thanks for your help.

it should start with "JH4DC530".
the 3 indicates manual trans, the 0 indicates Type-S.
other possibilities for those 2 digits are 38 (base manual) and 48 (automatic).

The guy asked a specific question regarding the VIN number. He got like 10 responses that didn't answer the question. Finally someone gave the correct response.
