Smog Check Research!!
I am asking for anyone who has done their smog check to post the results in the following order:
A. HC(ppm)
B. NOx(ppm)
C. CO(%)
D. Engine work - Say stock if stock otherwise list details of motor:
-pistons used and if oversized
- milled head/ how much?
- milled block/ how much?
- headgasket used
- Bored cylinder walls/ how much? (most likely piston size
will show this)
- Head work? port and polish?
- Fuel Pressure
I hope to find a correlation between some of the items and the results from a smog check, I know there are many variables, but perhaps there will be something that points to a change. Maybe I can get a chart that will estimate the amount of polutants to the compression ratio.
If anyone wants to contribute go ahead in the end it only wastes my time by looking and compiling the data.

wow...cool...i wanna be the first to post
-----------15 MPH--------25 MPH
1. HC-----220 ppm------29 ppm
2. NO-----2495 ppm-----447 ppm
3. CO-----0.61%---------0.38%
4. Engine work- stock jdm b16a, ctr cams, non-cold air intake, 2.25 custom magnaflow exhaust with 3-5 month old cat, results ran with a stock pr3 ecu at stock timing

Mine passed just this past summer. Got the papers in my car, and theres tons of snow out there so I'm not going to get it. It is an 89.
Pretty much stock. Only thing worth mentioning is; Unorthodox Racing Cam @ 2 adv.

I should will try to get all the different motors into separate columns but it would only make sense if we have enough of the same motors.
Also make sure the settings everyone is putting are what the motor was at at time of Smog not what they are now. Even if it is impossible to correlate the data with all the different factors, we may be able to get a list and people may know if they have a chance of passing.
Also if you had a swap make sure to note if they set up the system as such or as if the car was stock.

hey i was wonderin also...do u think my car will pass smog..89 hatch with d16z6 obd-0 to obd-1 conversion running a p28 throwin codes 20 and 41...running obd-0 injectors

an ecu throwin' codes must mean something is wrong. it may run "well"... but the emissions it puts out may be horrible... get those two fixed first

OK, heres the info. K&N drop in filter, cut open air box, xsi intake pipe, stock b16a, dc 4-2-1 header, original 89 cat, greddy mx exhaust. My dc header is hidden under the factory heat shield, and my 02 sensors are welded in factory locations. Timing was at 15deg. Obd0 with pwo ecu.

hcppm = 0017
co% = 0.08
Idle
hcppm = 0028
co% = 0.01
Thats purdy good ey!!
Hope that helps, Ryan

all you guys with b16s and stuff in your cars... are they not checkin the engine code when you are going to get it smogged in Cali? im thinkin of takin my ZC Crx in to see if it can pass but i dont know if they check the engine code or not. i dont want em to look at the Block code and say "ZC.... doesnt look like D15b to me... FAIL!"
Well, as far as a mugen pr3 passing, it will if it runs clean. But the added fuel may make it fail. If you are going to a mom and pop place that dosent care about visual, that will definately help. Forget about any obd0 b16 passing ref though. Thats my opinion. Ryan
i think most ref's nowadays know their stuff, especially when it comes to hondas. i haven't heard of a zc passing legally (no "tips" involved), and they will check your engine/ecu/chassis codes to make sure at least the engine and ecu match up.
the only difference between the mugen ecu and stock ecu is more aggresive fuel and timing maps, and the vtec engagement point. i'd go with stock ecu if you were trying to ref it, unless you have a stock program with certain check engine lights removed (such as the eld sensor)
but anyways, more smog results...me and ronald are trying everything to make our b16's pass

OBD0 b16 certified, its been done before. i know this dude in the bay area that did it. i would have certified my b16a1 as an OBD0 too, but i've already converted to OBD1. yes, i have a certified b16a1 in my crx. there are many ways to bypass these strict emission laws and most of these bypasses are legit. Then again posting these kind of information in a public forum like this can attract many spy pigs.
