Default QUESTIONS -- Getting Crower stage 2 cams for my H23 w/retainers and springs...

Is it needed to replace my valves as well or not needed. Engine has 90k on it and basic boltons I/H/E and soon to have SAFC. ANything else someone recommends to do while i'm doing this. Did timing belt/water pump like 10k miles ago. I also hear since this is an aggressive cam.. no need to really tune cam gears.. just use OEM ones. Thoughts? opinions? greatly appreciated.

I have seen that most of crower's stuff is set to run at 0,0 for the ludes. If you milled the head or anything then you might look into some adj. cam gears. I have no idea what the cams peak at or what the torque curve is but I would not suggest revving past stock limit unless you balance the devil out of the bottom end and replace those main bearings. Just my opinion. Be sure to post dyno results I want to know what those H23 cams do!

would u recommend getting new valves as well (my engine is at 90k) or u think cams/retainers/springs is good enough tuned w/SAFC is good enough?? Thanks.

your valves should be fine but a head rebuild might be in order. valve job, seals, guides and a thorough cleaning would help get the most longevity out of the cams.

If you're pulling the head I would put in H22a 10:1 pistons and bump the CR to 11:1 or so, or JDM H22a 10.6:1 and bump it to 11.5:1

The pistons are cheap and probably plentiful just get the right size bore, measure your cylinders carefully and account for the desired piston to wall clearance.

You should not seen new valves unless you are going to go with .5mm larger. When I did my H22 head up, it had 130k miles on it and all that was worn out were the exhaust guides. You will be fine with the springs and retainers and cams.

i'm not a pro in this.. but i've talked to 3 techies... one @ super autobacs, my regular mechanic and one @ prostreet and they said not needed unless u change the valves. they can install springs/retainers w/o pulling out the head.

What is the part number for the H23 cams, I cant find them on Crowers website. All that I see listed on there for H series is H22.

If you can spare the extra $$$ I'd get an adjustable fuel press. regulator as well as some adj. cam gears. The valves should be fine. I personally changed the valve-springs and retainers while the head was still on the block... I made my own custom tool.

Compressed air in the cylinders to hold the valves up while changing out the retainers and springs is the only way that I have heard of without removing the head. What was the special tool you made aries?
