Tranny problems on civic dx hatch
My beloved 96 DX hatch has 144500 miles on the original engine and tranny.
I had hoped to do a full swap but it just really isn't in the budget right now.
Unfortunately the car seems to be on the verge of losing it's transmission.
It is noisy as hell. As best I can tell from my online research the input shaft bearing and or the clutch throwout bearing are bad. The car is noisy in every gear but quiet in neutral, it also gets quieter when the clutch is disengaged. Also 3rd-4th gear shifts have gotten rough.
So my ?s are these
How difficult is it to replace the tranny in a home garage? I have a floor jack and jackstands. I am a fairly skilled mechanic, I have done everything from suspension swaps on my civic to valve adjustments on my ducati...
Any special tools I would need? I have a good compressor but no pneumatic tools for this kind of work yet.
I found a 97 ex tranny on ebay for a good price. Will it bolt right up with no issues?
Thanks in advance. Really nice forum you got here.

it is nice to have an impact gun for the spindle nuts, other than that it is straight forward and you should be able to handle it, dont forget the clutch alignment tool if you are replacing the clutch too. you will need a roll pin punch for the shift selector lever. it has a motherf===ER roll pin holding it to the trans. good luck.
Thanks that's good to know.
I will most likely be putting the new clutch on the new tranny while it is out of the car so hopefully that will simplify things...
Part of me is wondering if I am gonna be able to get the car up high enough to get the tranny out the bottom.

I fessed up and redid the ISB myself in my driveway...took like 6 or 7 hours in all

Thanks for the great write up bauley...
Unfortunately somebody snagged the transmission I was gonna buy as I was heading home.
If anyone has a very low mileage 96-00 EX tranny they want to sell let me know.
Knowing what I know now I will probably replace those 2 bearings on whatever tranny I buy just as a precautionary measure.
I think I can definitely handle the install.

OK I want to buy a low mileage 96-98 EX transmission. IF it came with a clutch and axles that would be mint. For some reason I can't post in the classifieds but on the off chance that someone selling one sees this contact me at eglorrai@yahoo.com
thanks

I'm beginning to wonder if i should just pull it and replace the bearing.
Only thing is the mileage on mine is so high Im scared ill do that and then something else will go wrong 10,000 miles later....
