how to spot bad motors when buying them?
im heading down to hmotorsonline tomoro and am going to pick up an sir II jdm b16a longblock. from what i have read, u can pick your own block from the ones he has right?
what are some tips for getting a better motor?
the only thing ill prob do is, if he permits, take out all the plugs and inspect if there is any oil on the tips. (thats why im swapping my current b16, piston rings are bad and oil is getting into the 4th cylinder)
anyone else got any other tricks?
form what ive read, hmo carries pretty decent shape motors, thanks guys
test only smog center here i come!

i'd be wary of any seller who wouldn't allow thier buyer to fully inspect a motor they're selling.
but you shouldn't hav an issue with HMO

yeah, check for rounded off camshafts and busted ones as well
It's happened before.
Look for any obvious oil leaks.
Another thing I've always wondered....when shop CLAIM to compression test a engine, why do they never record the readings....and why are the plugs usually rusted in the head like they were never checked out anyways. Althought we all know they say "compression tested" just to make the consumer feel better.
