gas milage....WOW!
check this out, i drive alot. LIke just 35 miles one way to school everyday. So i try and have a light foot most of the time. But i am afraid to get it to close to the E. Well for the last few fill ups i have been trying especially hard to make the tank of gas last as long as possible. Everything from extreme granny shifting, to setting cruse in a 45MPH zone at arond 49 or 50.
Well, this last fill up on the trip odometer i recorded 397miles since last fill up. But, and here is the crazy part...when i filled up, i only put like 11.4 or .5 gallons in. The car has a 13.8 gallon tank right?
That to me seems like too good of milage to be true. Has anyone else had similar experences???

that's normal cause ur not accounting for the reserve tank.
more accurately you can;
1. get a full tank of gas
2. set your trip odometer to zero
next time...
1. get a full tank again
2. and some calculation
total miles driven/total gallons u put in=actual mpg

All depends on how and where you drive. In my 1995 GSR hatch I can get 400km to a full tank or I can get 600km. If I really dip well into the reserve (beyond 42 litres) then I can most definitely get 600km with certain types of driving conditions.
I drive at least 2 hours per day, every day, so I get a plenty of opportunity for trying different speeds and routes.

I have a 1995 GSR w/ 65k miles and I always get about 21-24 mpg , even if i drive 200 miles on the highway I'll only get 27 mpg max. I still thinks that's amazing considering I have CAI syndrome and drive the car hard whereever I go. I used to do that in my friends Z28 and i'd get below 10 mpg.

The fuel gauge seems to always read low. On my civic, I have have the needle below the 'E' and have my low fuel light on. Then when I fill it up I find that I still had 1.5 gallons (approx 40 miles worth the way I drive) in the tank.
i've got 180miles on my tank right now and its a bit under 3/4 full. It has been ALL city driving. Im currently breakin' in the fully built motor (12:1) compression. Talk about efficient.
Ugh, this topic again.
Anyway it depends on how you measure it.
The most accurate way most people seem to agree on is the following.
Go to a gas station, pump gas until the click. Reset trip meter, driver....come back fill up at the same pump (grade of incline effects your fillup). Now see how many gallons you just threw in.....and how many miles on the odo.....and do the math.
Best i got was 36mpg highway(in the summer). worst i got was low 20s city (in the winter).
You cant judge by the needle in the gauge cause if i take a hard sweeper the gauge will read 1/2 full but after a minute or so it's back to almost empty. It's misleading esp since it appears to be moving at a non-linear rate meaning for me at least the gauge seems to be very hesistant to move when it's full but after the half mark it moves quick. You also cant judge by "oh the gas tank is 13.8 gallons, and blah blah blah" . The method described above is the best way to do it most people found.
Also side note- i was in my friend's impreza and we were low on gas, took a turn hard and the car almost stalled, the engine cut out but luckily the car was moving fast enough to catch itself and start back up.....thats when you know your too low on gas

Tires pressure affects gas mileage a lot. Go as high as you dare while still being under the limit printed on the sidewall and see what happens.
Last night I cut it closest.
I usually get about 450 kms out of a 41 liter tank.
I put in about 49.5 litres in the car at the pump. Most I had put in before was 45 litres!
Had 520 kms on the odo for the tank!
Damn.. the car would have surely stalled if I hadn't pulled into the pump!
I have an accurate reading though... I know the fuel economy now!
No too good. Engine needs servicing!

it was an estimate Mr. Scientist
Yah tire pressure does play a big roll (not pun intended)
Cause the more pressure you put you reduce the rolling resistance among other things, not to mention stiffens the tire up so less wasted energy to the ground from the twisting action.....toe (as in toe, caster, camber) effects milage too.
