Default A cold, fast night at the Keystone drags! (read on, cherished viewer!)

Local STS ***-kicker John Wagner (98 GS-R with some goodies) and I decided to go to the strip tonight, it's the second to last test & tune event at keystone before winter sets in, and we'd been talking about going when it was cooler and seeing what kind of times we could pull. Tonight certianly fit the bill for colder. It was fricking freezing out there, the sun went down at about 50 degrees and it was all downhill from there, just a few degrees above freezing...to put it another way, those guys who put ice all over their intercoolers and whatnot were going to go home with lots of ice. Last time i was out there, it was a pretty warm summer night, about 80 degrees, and I ran a 15.057, which was okay for my first time in the R, 2nd time ever at the strip. Obviously, being so close i wanted to hit 14s. My only power mod on the car is a comptech icebox, and this time i took the spare, jack, and rear decklid out, and dropped the front tires to 28 psi from my usual 35-37. All lauches were between 4-5k RPM, with full clutch in & out on every shift, and no intentional clutch slipping on the lauch (just dump the clutch & pray for traction)
Keystone is around 1200 feet above sea level if i'm reading the terraserver map right.

First run was against an RSX Type S, Which was pretty cool...I'm number 36:

Well, that settles getting into the 14s! Very happy with my first run, the car hooked up quite nicely, my glovebox flew open and distribued its contents all over the passenger seat & floor, and the fancy-pants RSX was a second slower. So gnyeah

Second run against a 98 Integra GS-R, bone stock, the guy just bought it used a few days before. He was "impressed by how (my) car just pulled away".

The adrenaline from the first run wasn't there, decent launch (didn't do a burnout, so the water made traction a bit weird for the first little bit). Alot of people there were having worse 2nd runs for some reason.

By the third run, it was downright cold, people like me were bundled in our ski jackets and layers, some of the kids were walking around in long sleeve shirts freezing their asses off...i remember when it was cool to wear as little as possible for the given temperature

I pulled up to the line to find this car come out of another lane, older style american body, pretty flat black paint, some obviously beefy rears, dual pipes, and i think traction bars. It reminded me of the GNX pics i've seen (it was a Grand National i found out later, turbo, 240ish HP stock the guy said, he didn't know what it was at now)...not yet knowing this, i still figure he'll have me for breakfast, it just looks like a serious drag car. We launch, and i got a pretty sweet takeoff, i'm surprised to find that the R is hanging with this angry buick...sure enough, VTEC works its magic and i start to pull on the guy, i'm yellin yee-ha like a redneck as we trip the lights...my new best:

A couple cars after me, a firebird tags the rail at speed and they have to bring out the ambulance (dunno what happened to driver, never heard good or bad), which put everything on pause for like 45 minutes...C O L D. They start up again, finish off the streets (ford F150 lightnigh ran a 12.5, a local import guy with a sweet nissan (SR20DET, mad turbos, lots of carbon fiber) ran a 12.02 (he's been knocking on 11s all summer)), and run the heavies & bikes (a rail ran an 8.5)...so our cars have been sitting for an hour by the time we get ready for our first run. I start the car, and it's pegged on COLD...let it idle for a few seconds, then rev it at 3000 till the thermostat moves a little about 2 minutes later...just warm enough, John and I arrranged to run together because he's got a 15.09 and wants 14s, thinks maybe i'll be a good carrot...we line up, the light goes, i'm asleep at the wheel and he jumps the light and redlights...i skidded for about 15 feet before anything happened, it was amusingly sucky for both of us.

Despite starting way behind, i still pulled on him, whcih kinda pissed john off, cuz his GS-R is a little GS and a big R; he's getting used to beating lots of people in autocross on his Azenis, by pretty significant margins, and i don't think he likes to loose 14s next time john! I'm a happy camper, 14.6 in a nearly stock R, driven by a die-hard non-drag driver. Thanks for reading if you made it this far, if not, may the fleas of a thousand camels infest your armpits!

Damm, I only can dream of drag racing those times like yours!
It's fun because me and Fuminsho raced one time on the highway. I with all bolt-ons and his stock with his wife in the car. Funminsho WON the battle, but not the WAR! LOL! I just suck at drag racing, but Auto-X-ing is my favorite!

hey, maybe he had some giant MIB style jet engines in the trunk, but he didn't use 'em, and i won the race. I'm not a big theory racer, if i **** up a launch and loose to a geo i'm not gonna say "well, i've run a 14.6, so it doesn't matter", i'm gonna say "well, i lost to a geo that race". I find it hard to believe that he would "let" me pull on him ever so slightly....would you? Would I? No.

And you mean VTEC isn't magic? I thought the little gerbils under that hood thing put their little wizard hats on and starting chanting and waving their little wands, making my car go faster!

Hey man congrads. I met you there earlier in the summer...I talked to you for a bit...I am goin next week and hopefully will run low 14's with cooler weather setting in...my best 60ft there was a 2.2 so your 2.3 is pretty good, considering the tracks condition(looks like a roller coaster). Do you know Eric with the other white ITR(no wing, black spoon wheels) he ran a 13.96 on a stock clutch with 76,xxx miles on it...Rozzo's Sentra is sick...anyway we are all tring to meet up somewhere this weekend so post back if you wanna try to come out....talk to you lata

yeah, you had the CW one, right? I still haven't met the CF hood one, but i heard about his run, that's fantastic. Now we need to get you guys hooked on the corners Dress warm next week, if it's anything like tonight...sheesh. Nomex-lined shoes are great for keeping feet warm tho . I was the only R tonight, there were a pack of GS-Rs though..and Razzo almost had it, 12.02...sheesh. He's funny "I just wish the damn thing would get it over with."

Good job Scott. I like reading about your car because it's modded almost exactly the way mine is. You still have timing set at 18 degrees right? What kind of dyno figures did you put down? If I remember correctly, last time you dyno'd was on a Mustang dyno? Sorry for all the dumb questions but I'm trying to figure out what kind of times I should realistically shoot for when I do make it out to the strip.

D(chiselmonkey): I'm sorry your brain can't keep up with all the big words, just look at the pretty pictures of the timeslips and pretend you know what's going on.

Piyo: 12 bucks to run, there would have been 5 runs last night but that guy who tagged the wall meant 45 minutes of nothing going on, so we only got 4. It's 6 bucks to spectate, and there's plenty of time to do that between runs...there was a sweet Superstock chevy doing some wicked Fast & Furious style wheelstands at the launch...not quite that extended tho

Ross: Timing at 18 degrees BTDC, Dynoed at 155 peak on a mustang dyno. Check S&M racing for dyno details, basically, mustangs read low but are very consistent because they're power absorption brake dynos, instead of accelerometers like dynojets (where i'd probbaly be in the 170-180 range depending on the dyno)

Explanation eh? Aleph is DA man... that's all..
hehehe.. his mind is one with his R..

note: can't you see he went autox-ing(a lot), track-ing, now Drag-ing too with his R.
maybe the only thing he didn't do is sleep-ing, eat-ing, study-ing..and Kiss-ing his R..

J/K.... to Aleph....

Hehe, you flatter me Piyo ...i'm not a drag racer either, the car does most of the work in the 1/4 mile i'd say (at least when you don't have to worry about traction all that much)...just 4500 RPM, dump, and try not to screw up shifts
It's a fun, cheap way to spend a thursday night, but i still prefer turning. I figure that once i put the bar in, that's another 80 lbs, had to go for a 14 second run so i can feel cool. mission accomplished ...D's funny, i talked to him while they were clearin gthe track from that guy's crash, told him about my time..."dood, that's pretty fast, nice job. You're still a tool for dragracing tho"

Aleph - a great novel! I enjoyed read your R spanking other cars. If you don't mind me asking, what are you dynoing at right now?

Hehe, you OBVIOUSLY didn't read the ENTIRE book, because i already answered when ross asked:

Aleph....if you are in CSP, how can your car be "pretty much stock". You took the mods off for the end of the AutoX season?

Nice

My goal is to hit 14.1 with just drag radials.

I've hit 14.67 in 95 degree heat so with 45 degree temps and drag radials + more practice that is my goal

I'm not sure i understand yer question nEo, but i'll try to answer anyway...i have a comptech icebox intake on my car and a JDM rear strut tower bar, either of which alone would bump me from GS to CSP. One of the clubs in pittsburgh does not allow race tires in stock classes, unlike the SCCA...so, to stay legal and run race tires at both lots, i run CSP everywhere. It's kinda fun going up against the preped miatas and CRXs, now and again i even beat them I mean, everyone knows the R is dominant in GS, i'm trying to conquer new worlds. I don't change my mods for the seasons.
