Cooling fan problem
hey gang
My cooling fan comes on, in short bursts, whenever it wants to. The ignition is off and the engine is cool to the touch.
It is the relay or the switchs that control the relay?
There is a switch where the upper hose meets the engine and another were the lower hose meets the thermostat housing. which one is it?
thanks bunch!!
p.s I have a 91 accord lx

the cooling fan will run even after the key is out of the ingnition if the car has been running for awhile.....even though the valve cover may seem cool, ur thermostat may still be reading a high temp...ur situation just sounds normal.....if its bugging you, give ur bay a thorough cleaning.....all the removed grime will actually let the engine disapate heat properly, allowing the block to cool down faster
The fan switch works on temperature alone and is independent of the ignition key.
If the fan goes on/off when your engine is cold than you have a bad fan switch and u need to replace the switch. On really hot days your fan may run for some time after you turn your engine off. And it may cycle on/off for a while until the engine cools down enough to turn off the fan switch completely. This is normal. However on really hot days a car with a cold engine (an engine that has been sitting for over an hour, at least) should not have a running cooling fan - again bad fan switch. As well the fan should not go on/off on it's own at any other time than with a hot engine. Period.
If you suspect the switch. Change it. It's cheap. The battery that your bad fan switch eventually kills is more expensive than the fan switch. Change the fan switch or lose your battery. It's your choice.
