Default Just installed Mugen Airbox...

I got the airbox on Friday, and since I was working today I pulled the car into the shop to get the airbox on. Its a really nice piece, and overall fit and finish is excellent. There was some minor trimming of the snorkel so that it would accept the duct, but other than that it fits great. Looks almost stock, too. Ill try and snap some pics when I get home. I havent driven it yet, but Im very anxious to see how it performs.

On a side note, I installed a Top Fuel Power Neo on Wednesday. I removed it today. It sucks. It seemed to have made the car slightly louder, it didnt improve anything even the slightest bit, and actually hurt gas mileage a little. All in all, dont buy it if you were thinking about it. In theory, it works, so I figured Id give it a try...but in reality it sucks. There goes $100.

Here are some pics. Sorry for the shitty quality, my digi is so outdated its not even funny...

First impressions are amazing. The car is much more responsive then before. Midrange has improved incredibly considering this is the only mod I have. So far I absolutley love it. And, its quiet as hell, no annoying "intake" sounds like the AEM and all others like it. When i-VTEC switches over, its much more of a difference than before, and the sound is just awesome. Highly recommended.

Not to sound like an ***. But i cant see How the placement of that airbox improves anything. Im not saying it doesnt. Because for 650 it better + its Mugen, but still it kind of bothers me to see some stock piping and just that big box. I dont know can someone explain this to me.

THANK GODDDDDD...im not the only one that feels this way lolol.
But yea can someone explain this to me/us?
it seems like AEM kinda waste some money on that CAI if all that extra piping isnt really doing shiet.

Wide open box, larger filter which equals more surface area, and great midrange power as opposed to others. It uses stock piping because it doesnt need larger to be effective, and the longer the piping is, the greater the pressure drop. Im sure there are others out there that perform as good, but Mugen looks stock, and doesnt have the annoying intake growl that ALL of the other intakes have. To each their own.

The box looks awesome. Good throttle response from the box design, good midrange as you reported, and quieter than open element filters. I've seen the inside of the Mugen box, and its like glass. for a nice piece. Glad you're happy with it.

650? I don't think that "box" could even give you that much more hp for almost 3 times what a regular intake costs, but....if you like it and all cool . I just would've bought hondata or something else. I'm interested in some numbers though. what kind of increase in hp/tq did you see? Just want to see what 650 gets you.

its nice, especially since you know not a lot of people will have it.

but personally, I just think that its a glorified icebox

Looks nice, but not my cup of tea. And if you had wanted to hondata could have been had for 600.00+ shipping from hondata. But if you like mugen then go for it.

Looks great, but I feel like some of the others. Just doesn't look like it would perform as well as other intakes. It would be nice to see some numbers.

From what I know about the Mugen airbox, it's not designed for MAX HP or HP at the upper rev ranges. The airbox is designed to give your strong midrange power and consistent pressure--more for circuit racing, where you're not always at WOT or past 6500 rpm. That said, I don't know how effective the design is. Once our friend here gets it on the dyno, we'll see about that. Others do report nice gains, however.

One questions: How does the Comptech Icebox perform against the Mugen? It's price is substantially cheaper $289 and appears to be a similar design. Anyone out there know?

Thats exactly what I was looking for in an intake, midrange. Throttle respones and midrange has improved very well. Honestly, the Comptech is probably not much different except for the price. But I wanted the Mugen, and I could afford it, so I bought it. And Im happy.

The only other intake I was considering, which I still want to get down the line and compare it to the Mugen, is the ARC. But what I dont like about the ARC is the fact the the filter is open, and I would imagine that it would soak up more heat than a closed-box design. The Mugen isnt for everyone, and yes you can spend less than half the money for an intake that will perform somewhat the same, but it provided gains where I wanted them. Im not interested in peak numbers, I want useable power.

I have the comptech icebox in my car, and from people's descriptions, it seems to yield similar results/characteristics. I have no empirical data, but subjectively comparing the two...both seem to improve midrange and throttle response, as you would imagine from a box design.
