CV joints, front end noise
if there is no grease then what other problems would fit the symptoms? could the joint be going out and the boot be holding the grease in? could an axle going bad cause the clicking?

yes, axles can go bad and the boot can look brand new. most of the time a bad cv is identified by a clicking noise when turning. (not just turning wheel).
test: car stopped, turn wheel all the way over and accellerate slowly then a little faster. did it click? on which side? repeat in other direction and note same items.
