how to on carbon fiber
i posted this on the appearance topic too but i was wondering how hard it is to lay carbon fiber. how is it done and where do you get it. what equipment/tools are needed? i have some knowledge in fiberglass. is it anything like that. i want to try my hand at making some gauge pods and other little piece that are overpriced
I've dipped into this realm, and for the amateur its not really any different from fiberglass, and fiiberglass tutorials are easier to find.
My advice is to go to a boat shop, talk to the guys there, but DONT buy anything.
GO talk to more people, and research MORE online, then plan your project before you buy.
Start with a small project, like a flat facing or a tube... your first project will invariably end up in the trash, so plan to do it with fiberglass to save money.
Also (here's a big epiphany) if you can make something that is non-load bearing work with fiberglass (which costs WAY less than CF) do it with fiberglass, and then COVER it with CF on the last layer... thats how most CF stuff you buy is done anyway
.
One more hint, and this is the BIGGEST one... You will be TEMPTED by the "ester" resins... they are cheaper than Epoxy resin...and weaker and they make most people very SICK. I recommend getting out another $10 bill and buying a can of EPOXY resin and hardener... its STRONGER and it does not make you WRETCH.
