Default Is Del Sol right for me?

Hey. Im almost 18 years old and I have been looking at serveral cars. I first spoted the CRX. I thought it looked okay... Im not to crazy about the squareish hatch back look. I told my friend about it at school and he told me to check out the Del Sol. One look and I fell in love. I read about 50 reviews on it and alot of problems came up with leaking on the roof (not a big deal.) But I do have some questions.

1) Which version is right for me?
I wan't to have the fastest it can get stock. That would be the V-tec 160 HP one right? What verison is that called? And of course 5 speed stick.

2) Can I FIT into it?
Also in thouse reviews I read that people 6 feet - 6 feet 8 inches fit fine into it. I am 6 feet almost 4 inches (last time I measured.) Will I have any trouble with the top on?

3) I was looking around and I can't find any crash test rating (for almost any honda that is.)

4) What are the specs of the car(stock)? As I mean... weight... hight.... width...

5) Whats the major differences between the CRX and the Del Sol? They look quite alike.

6) Are their ANY differences in between the years Del Sol was made?

7) I live in wisconsin and we get a bit of snow in the winter. Will I have enough ground clearnce for snow? How does it handle in the snow? I get started getting into cars in the last few months... Is it possible to raise my car in the winter and lower it in the spring threw fall without having to shovel loads of cash everytime i do it? (Is it something I can do with a jack or do I have to take it to a shop?)

8) How many miles can you expect to get out of the engine? I heard that one guy got like 242k.

Thats all the questions I can think of now...... Sorry if I am repeating past questions. But I just got done reading a crap load of reviews and now my eyes hurt.

The info is for the vtec model, if you need info on the other models or years just look under "get used car info" on autotrader.com.

Call your insurance Co and get a quote. They are considered a sports car so insurance is jacked up.

Oh ya... Anther question.
If I get the V-tech Del Sol with the 160 hp... Will my insurance rocket up from my current Mercury Tracer 1998 LS?
I think it might because I is consired more of a sporter car...
But then again I hear alot of good things about Honda (reilble and somewhat cheap to fix.)

Thanks.

yes there are diff between the years...93-95 i believe has the fog lights in the bumper and also a leak problem in the roofs...or something to that degree... then the newer 96 and 97 ones dont have the foglights which look bad IMO...

I love my Sol and the leaking roof can be more of a pain then you think....imagine getting in your car and your seat is wet, or water dripping on your leg as you drive.

The best way to see if you fit or like it is to test drive it.

Can't you just make a better seal for the roof?

Ill have to see if my local dealers have any on display.

I heard that all the years have leaking problems with the roof also...

Get a Del Sol with a B16 in it, you won't be disappointed. That way you have a headstart.

the main thing you should do to determine which car you should buy is...

go drive it, the crx and the del sol, so then you can see which one suits your needs more.

personally, i think the crx is a really fun car to drive, has lots of headroom(in my 85) you're probably looking for a 89-91 though, since you're looking at the del sol.

but go drive them both, and you'll know which one you want more.

I was looking around at online prices for the Del Sol and they range from anywhere from 3,000-10,000. What is a good ball park for a 1997 or 1996 V-tec del sol with the car itself less than 125k miles (all stock.)

Some of my friends in school are really into cars. One in particular knows a lot about Honda. I told him I was looking to buy a Del Sol and he said nothing but good things about it. I do really feel like a retard though when he says stuff I have no freaking clue what it means. But I am learning, which is half the fun.

Anther thing: Why can I only post 5 messages every 24 hours? I looked for sticky forums telling me why but I can’t find why... They want me to shovel out money for a membership or something?

hey, just read a lot on the forums and you will learn. Make sure you get the del sol vtec with 160hp. It's got the b16 engine in it, it's a dual overhead cam, and has an 8,000 rpm redline (just trying to help you identify the engine incase you don't know). You'll be happy with that engine it's a lot of fun. Also, i've read to check the seals on the roof when searching for one so make sure you run the hose over the roof well before you buy it or something. I wouldn't pay $10k for a del sol with 100k even though they seem to be kind of rare. I kind of group them in with civics so i'd try to compare prices with the same year mileage civics, except the vtec del sol's will be worth a little more. I don't really know how to price del sols sorry. But, I wouldn't pay 10k for a del sol, even a 97 with 30k miles on it, it's still a 7 year old car. good luck with your searching

I think the reason you can't post more than 5 messages every 24 hours is to encourage new users to use the search function and to keep people who want to act dumb from registering and spamming the forums with 100 garbage posts just because they was to be annoying. You don't have to pay to become a normal member you just have to wait a certain period of time I think.

I think most of your questions have been answered but I'll throw my $.02 in

I'm 6'1 250lbs. and I fit fine. I can't autocross with the roof on because the helmet hits it, but that's the only problem I've ever had with headroom...and that's with the seat vertical. Normally I drive with it leaned back a bit.

The roof seals were a problem on the '93-'94s. The seals were updated in '95. If the car that you're looking at has little rubber bumps on the seals then it's the newer version.

Check out http://www.teamdelsol.com for specs on the car, and general del Sol info.

Sols handle just as well in the snow as a Civic. FWD helps, and it has as much ground clearance as any other compact, so that won't be an issue unless you lower it.

Hope that helps

Don't buy a V-TECH model , make sure its the Del Sol VTEC. You have 3 choices: Del Sol S (non vtec), Del Sol Si (sohc vtec), & Del Sol VTEC (dohc vtec).

My mother has a 1997 Del Sol S (shittiest model, much like a DX with 106hp, etc.) and to me it's an okay car. I'm 6' and it fits me *okay*, but if I was any bigger I don't think I'd like the car because you cannot stretch your legs out unless you sit straight up in the seat.

Also I say do NOT buy the Del Sol VTEC model. They are getting older and more miled up. They are too pricey and the insurance will be more pricey too.

If I were you I'd find the highest miled up Del Sol S model.

What? Why would you buy the crappy one?

Because you will get it cheap as hell AND yo can add a a lower mileage engine that is better than the B16A.

I have a B16A in a 1992 Si hatchback and it pulls okay, but I've also owned a B18C1 in a 1992 Si hatchback at the same time and the B18C1 pulled much harder than the B16A and outpowered it by 150whp to 143whp. The torque is also way better with a B18C1. Mine did 121ft-lbs. versus the weak 102ft-lbs. of the B16A.

If you want to get crazy you can throw in a Type R engine. I currently have one of those in a 1992 CX and it dynoes 175whp with 130ft-lbs. of torque.

For the cheap-*** price you could get a base model Del Sol S, you could drop some good cash on a better engine swap, suspension package, wheels/tires, etc.

Screw paying too much for a Del Sol VTEC - build a better one!

Oh BTW:

It's VTEC, not V-Tech.

Good point, and if you call your insurance i'll bet that the rates are lower on the S verses the Si or V-TEC
