HAHA, im ghetto with my numbers, I use racer tape, which is very much like duct tape.. I just make the numbers with pieces of tape..
Shoe polish is OK if you take it off correctly.. spray it well with windex, then use the razorblade to take it off, it will keep it from flaking.

Oh cool, I never thought about tape...., and on the webpage for the track im going to start going to (after my car is fixed) says shoe polish isnt allowed, But thanks..
Commercial sign places usually have the magnet sheets big enough for numbers. They will make up the sticker numbers for you and stick them to the magnets too. You should get a couple numbers with a couple 6's at least, which can either be 9's or 6's when you put them upside down. Just in case alot of numbers have been taken on race day.
You can make your own by printing letters on your computer, tracing onto the magnetic and then cutting them out. Use contact paper (plasticy) to make then different colors. Or, you can order them from a bunch of different places, Solotime (www.solotime.com) is one of them. Remember to keep them in a clearly legible font so courseworkers+t&s don't have to try and decipher hieroglyphics on the side of your car after you pop a cone.
BTW, as for tape, Home Depot carries a 3M cloth tape that is very similar to racer tape. Only difference Honda318dx and I found between the two is that my tape's adhesive is a little stronger. Another option well-liked by the No Gum Racing crew is painter's tape. Not sure if it comes in any color other than blue, but that is very paint-friendly (as it should be).
