Noisy Walbo 255lph, now noisier, any ideas?
Hi. I was wondering if you all might have any ideas. I have a B18C1 T3/T4 turbo CRX.
I have a Walbro 255lph fuel pump, and it has always made the classic WEHWEHWEHWEHWEH noise at idle.
However, today, it was even louder. I could hear a noise similar to a bad ground noise, even outside the CRX.
I was thinking either the fuel pump is vibrating against something, or causing the exhaust to vibrate. I tried moving the exhaust around on the hangers, but it made no difference in the noise.
Also, I thought perhaps the pump is stuck in "priming mode." I tried tapping on the main relay, to see if this would get it out of "priming mode." I also tried unhooking the wires to the fuel pump and hooking it back up. That didn't do anything.
So, if anybody has a suggestion, please post. Thank you for any help you might suggest.

Right, I am still hearing the added noise after I tried the things that I mentioned above.
I should also mention that I checked the battery ground, since the battery has been relocated to the hatch in a battery box. However, I feel that I have ruled the battery ground out as a source of the noise.
The noise is definately originating in the back of the car. The back of the car is stripped, so I am used to quite a bit of noise.

No, I don't think so. I believe it may be something to do with the pump stuck in "prime", or a failing pump, thus making it noisier.
However, thanks for your suggestion.
Does anybody have experience with a similar problem?

hey i think i may be in the same situation as you are in. but it seems as though my FP makes a louder noise when i'm braking or at idle with my foot on the brake. i'm gonna check it out this weekend and see what's up. i've also been getting a CEL every now and then so i assumed it was my fuel filter but now that that's been changed, i'm looking at the fuel pump since i've been noticing that it's making a louder than usual noise.
Does your FP start making an almost metallic noise? That is what mine is doing.
I also checked my fuel filter and it was fine. Please let me know if you figure your problem out.

I think when you turn the ignition, it primes up first, and then starts pushing. You know that noise when you turn the key while the CEL lights up. I am reasonably sure that is the priming noise.
However, I could be wrong. I was just thinking that if it pump primes itself, it may push "harder" at first. And if it were stuck, this would make more noise. Just an idea I had.
However, you may be correct, I am not sure if fluid mechanics would permit a pump to be stuck on "prime."
Something just occured to me. If something were stuck in either the pump inlet or outlet, it could restrict fuel flow or make the flow turbulent. The restriction or turbulence of the fuel flow could result in making the pump noisier.
I have experience with aquarium powerheads, they make a lot of noise when they get something stuck in the inlet or outlet, or aren't properly submerged. Does this seem like a likely explanation?

damn this is making me ponder...i'm gonna take out my fuel pump this friday first thing after work and find out what it is. i'll let'ca know after doing that.

Usually when this happens it's because you used the stock honda wiring to power the pump. The walbro draws more power than the stock wire harness can fully keep up with. The best way to power the walbro is to run a relay from the battery that's triggered by the stock pump wires. That way you'll get a clean, steady current straight from the battery that turns on and off like the stock pump.

I used different wiring with a relay and a 15A fuse (if I remember right) when I installed the pump, which was probably about two years ago. The extra noise is a new development. I actually don't even care how noisy it is, as long as something is not wrong.
Thank you for the suggestion though.

It is loud as long as the motor is running. If I don't start the car, just turn the ignition, I can hear the WEH noise as it primes and then it stops as it always has.
The full tank of gas is something I had not considered. I usually don't fill the gas tank up all the way, and I recently did.
I'll go drive around and see if less gas makes a difference. Thanks for your suggestion.

Something to consider......the pump is either "on" of "off", no prime. That noise you hear when you turn the key to on is the main relay turning the pump "on" to fill the fuel lines. It's not a "prime" mode of the pump, just off or on.

I fixed my problem. I loosened the bracket that is around the fuel pump wires, and tried banging things around. I think I just got lucky, maybe a little something was stuck somewhere, and I was able to free it up. It did the trick, though, no more noise.
Who knows, maybe the noise went away on its own, despite what I did or didn't do. My car has a mind of its own sometimes.
I still don't know what caused it, but it is gone after the "re-install."
Thanks for everybody's comments.

Hehehe.. if something's broke/not working correctly... bang the sh** out of it untill it starts to work correctly

I just started reading this thread yesterday and thought to myself, huh.... mine is starting to sound louder. I fill up my tank with gas today and now I hear a gurgling sound coming from the fuel tank. Is this normal? If it is why haven't I noticed it before?
