Starter bike, how about a aprilia mille? =]
I'm going to be getting my permit next week, and my license early April. So i'm looking around to see what kinda used bikes are available. I have my eye on a cbr600rr for a first starter bike, which will run me about $4000. So I was thinking, why spend $4000 now on a used bike when I can put it for a downpayment and get the bike I really want.
I know an aprilira is fast for a first bike, but I think I can control it, and i'm mature enough not to do anything stupid. What do you guys think? I really have my eye on that aprilia mille. Its probably best for me to get the cbr600 to get myself use to driving, making turns and shifting, but I guess i'm kinda impatient to get my aprilia.
thanks guys,

thanks guys,
First of all, where are you going to get a CBR600rr for $4000??? Second of all, what is it about the aprilia that you think you need to spend the extra $9000 on? If you just want an aprilia name go buy a rs50. Don't forget you need to include money for gear and insurance. Do you know what insurance would cost on a mille? dont be a squid
Thanks for flaming me guys
I just wanted to know what you guys thought about that idea. Maybe I'll stick with the cbr600 until I get some more experience under my hands. We'll see what happens...
and yes, i've thought about gear, insurance and registration already.

You haven't been paying attention, grasshopper. Look at a few posts and you'll see what we recommend for a used bike, especially for a newbie.

There's no way you can get a CBR600RR for $4k. Absolutely impossible, unless there are external circumstances you haven't mentioned (it's a family member's bike...you gave your left nut to the previous owner to save his life...)

Any bike is fast (well, except maybe Buell Blasts...hahaha). Regardless of how proficient you imagine you will be, the learning curve while riding a Mille is a lot more extreme than, say, a Kawasaki EX250. Can you do it on a Mille? Sure. Are you gonna look like an idiot trying to learn how to u-turn on a bigger, heavier bike? Possibly. Is it going to hurt your wallet a lot when you ... WHEN ... WHEN ... you drop the bike and mess up all that pretty, EXPENSIVE plastic? You betcha.
In the end, choose with your brain and you'll have a more fulfilling, longer-lasting motorcycle experience than scaring the $hit out of yourself with a bike that's not user-friendly.

now when you say "first starter bike", do you mean you've never rode a bike before or do you mean that you've riddin a friend's bike 2 or 3 times? the rr is far from a starter bike, and no matter how mature you think you are, you need to respect the beast and learn on a smaller bike. the rr is way to nice of a bike to be dropping and the first few months, there will be accidents no matter how careful you are. better to drop a cheap bike at a light.

We're not so much flaming you as we just can't believe how incredibly stupid it is. Maybe to someone who hasn't ridden before it doesn't seem like a "big deal" to just up and buy one of the fastest most expensive machines out there...but its just not smart. Furthermore, if you want to go ahead and buy a bike you won't outgrow, IMHO...pick up something nice like a 600rr and BE CAREFUL....truley know your limits, or you WILL get hurt. I started life out on a 954rr which is actually probably faster than a mille so I'm definitely not flaming, but I just don't see the point to the aprillia unless you are going to do some serious carving. Buy the 600rr, uprgrade in 2-3 years because it will take you atleast that long to reach the limits of that bike. Hey, and then on the brightside you could pick up a nice 1-2 year old used factory

maybe the 600rr is heavily damaged?
and not only will the mille be a LOT more expensive, the insurance will be costy as hell, and repairs/maintenence will be expensive. it is also a lot torquier than the 600rr, meaning it goes fast easier. the cbr needs to be revved up higher to get its big hp, the aprilia gets it a lot earlier. not good for learning

OK, thanks for the imformative replys. I'll stick with the CBR until I get enough skills, and until I become most comfortable then i'll get the aprilia.
In my first post I meant to say cbr600, not the RR. I was checking out some cbr600rr's earlier, and yes they are more than $4K easily.
I'm planning on taking the motorcycle driving schools taught here in so cal. I forget the name(its in my favorites at home), but they have 5 classes. Hopefully I can become as good of a driver on the bike as I am with my car.
thanks again...

There ya go...now you sound like someone who isn't as likely to die this summer! Good choice on a CBR 600 for a first bike. Don't set your heart on a aprilia, they are a lot of money for a big name, but maybe it'll really suit you in the feature. Good luck on the bike and keep us updated on what you pick up.

Initially way back, I was checking out the RC51. I did alot of research on it and i fell in love with it first time I saw it. I have 2 friends who have them and they love it(one of them recently crashed). What do you guys think of this as a first bike? I know its kinda big, but its tempting as it doesn't cost *too* much more than a new cbr600.

I think its a sickness I have(or a death wish). But when I buy something, I'd rather buy the better of the two. Spending a few thousand now is worth it to me if it could last me several years longer in the future. I guess its hard to me to understand, and my stubborness, on the skill required to ride a bike. I've never riden one, but hopefully I'll get a better feeling when I take my MSF course on april 2nd.
In my eyes, driving super safe and taking those driving courses will put me in good hands. I dunno, just thoughts rushing through my head.

No doubt I am the same also. But you have to understand that these pieces of machinery are 11 second or less beasts out of the box. Unlike cage's there is nothing to take the hit if you crash, and if there is it's a little piece of aluminum which isn't much if you crash to protect you. Play it safe man, and ride responsibly out there
I understand how you want to always but the better product from a quality point of view, but you know what, we can't really use that logic on motocycles. The question on bike often is not how much you can afford, but rather, how much can you handle as a rider???
I think over a dozen people on this board alone would pay you a visit if you messed up a mille. It's like a ferrari, you have an obligation beyond yourself. Wreck as many preludes as you want but wreck a 360 and people have the right to throw rotten fruit at you a la italia. That said, look into a cheaper cbr... maybe an f2 and then you can save money towards gear and your future down payment.
My first bike was a 98 R1....its the best thing I ever bought, learned very quick how to ride and now I won't get bored and want to spend another 5 grand on a bigger bike, but I'm also almost 30 so I'm not into the stunning thing, don't know how old you are 99 SH but the 600 sounds good
you also have to realize, 600cc sport bikes are FAST. people that only ride liter bikes will say they are slow, but thats just stupid. a used cbr600 is fine to start with if you take it slowly and dont try anything past your limits
I say the RC51 actually isn't SUCH a stoopid idea. Granted it is still wicked fast, but if you are the type that want the best (I understand I am the same way) hit it up., cause the cost to replace fairing etc. is a lot cheaper than a mille. In my opinion the aprilia is mostly a name as it can be spanked by less expensive jap rockets. Like I said, I started on a 954 last year...so I can't really argue much with you, but you're in for an awakening when you start riding. This things are wayyyyy more powerful than you can imagine. Plus maybe you'll be more careful with a 7k dollar bike opposed to a 4k dollar bike, I know I would be. Just know your limits.
I agree, didnt britney spears mess up a rental modena when she accidentally misshifted and messed up the car?
I guess we'll see when it comes down to the day I purchase the bike. The aprilia will definatley come down the line along with more experience. With the mentality I'm going right now, I forsee myself purcahsing the rc51. BTW, i'm only 22 and i've got alot to learn in my future. I'm going to try to do more research in insurance rates in so cal to get a better picture of what i'm looking at.
The information you guys have provided me is great. thanks for the words of advice!

If you've got a clean history for the most part, you should be able to get liability for around 300-400 bucks a year, but that can vary a lot. But...if you are financing a bike or get a loan, you have to have comprehensive, which i got quoted around 2k. Check around, and I say go for the RC51, just be careful.
u guys pay that much for insurance??? i jus got a 04 cbr600rr and am only 22 n am payin 35bucks a month for full coverage. and i got one accient on my record and my company is state farm.. so maybe u guys should check that company out.
I'm on state farm, and they wanted like 1600 for full coverage...it's rape. Probably because I am only 19 and I'm on a new liter bike.
