What are the visual differences between a 1st gen b16 and a 2nd gen?
I know the valve cover is different. On the 2nd gen, the VTEC is bigger than the DOHC, while on the 1st gen, the DOHC is bigger than the VTEC. If this is any misinformation, please disregard.
it varies on the 1st gen. I thought that too but on inlinefour.com they advertise 1st gens with both valvecovers. thanks anyways

dont go buy the valve cover, its too easy to swap them.
go buy the plugs on the distributor:
1st gen have milky white plugs
2nd gen have gray plugs
intake manifold
1st gen has a stamp that says something on it right on top
2nd gen has the 3 lines across it
also the crank pulley
1st gen have a v-belt pulley for the power steering
2nd gen have a ribbed belt for the PS
there are more but i forget

it tells u the year right on the head and for the block there is a way to distinguish from the number under the block stamp and the transmission should be a hydrolic if it is a second gen

Right above the header on the far left (closest to distributor side). There will be a circle with a line through it and the year of manufacture in it. (92 etc..)
edit* I also think all JDM first gen b16's serial # starts with a 1, and all 2nd gen start with a 5.

Obd2 dohc vtec motors hav bolts instead of studs holding the exhaust manifold up while the Obd1 vtec motors hav studs coming out of the head.
