Upgrading header worth it for my setup??
Cliff Notes: Are the gains from a Greddy header worth the $400 price tag for my setup??
Hey guys, I am contemplating getting a new header if the gains are significant enough to justify the price tag. I was really serious about getting a header of SMSP quality (based on what others have said about these kinds of headers) but now I am not so sure since I will have to redo the rest of my exhaust system (2.25"piping). So now I am looking at the Greddy header.
I use my car for some daily driving, a lot of autoXing, and a few track events.
The goal for my car is to make it perform as well as possible for as little $$ as possible. I don't mod my car just to spend money on it. I am looking for the best mods for the money.
I am pretty much done modding my car. My engine mods consist of a JDM H22 swap, AEM intake, Carsound cat, and Thermal cat-back exhaust. The H22 swap that I bought came with the full OEM JDM H22 header that is in really good condition. My question is, are the gains from the Greddy header (if any at all) based on my setup worth the $400 price tag??
Let me know what you think.
Thanks

i personally would not if your goal is "the best HP for the $$". i would look into another header. i personally purchased the PROSPEED header. it is still at UPS waiting on me to get it (not in the country currently) but it was $530 for a mild steel header. they tell me i should see 10 - 15 whp from it, whereas i dont think you would see over 5whp from the greddy @ $400.

Thanks for the replies guy. I am just curious if I will see these projected hp/trq gains with my few mods.
Ultimately, no header for an H22 is as good as the Mugen. I have personally never seen an H22 gain anymore than 7kw (10hp) without tune.
If it were me, I woud personally use the $400 for a VAFC or save for a Hondata first. The best Header and retune result (with CAI, Catback, JDM Euro-R inlet and Hondata S200) was 12kw (17/18hp) with a mugen header, but made significant midrange gains

With the number of options these days I wouldn't buy a Greddy or a Mugen.
Prospeed is a good option. You want a 2.5" collector..the greddy is only 2"

ive allready contacted hytech and the header looks good and the price is in line with mugen but i think the gains would out number the mugen without trying.
im looking at prospeed also but i think hytech is the choice for me right now.. Im waiting till i get my VAFC and hi flow cat and exhaust until i get the hytech

yeah, stainless is like $700 + shipping.

i still havent gotten mine yet. it is waiting at UPS for me to return to the states and pick it up. but so far the only complaint about prospeed is the time. it took about a month for me to get mine, but they were quite backlogged.

good job on the worthless post
Anyways, i agree that the Greddy probably isn't going to be the best header for your money. I say spend that $400 on something else. I personally am waiting on my SMSP header.

I personally would wait on an independant dyno before i spent $1300 for a damn header.
the guys at import-palace said the hytech pulled 22whp on the first pull over the stock exhaust manifold. once again though... prove it on the Dyno, dont just tell me.
i have seen 17whp gain dyno charts done independantly with the PROSPEED over stock.

i would say the best would be: mugen, prospeed, jdm type-s, smsp(but too many mods are needed), tork-step header, greddy or jun... that is my personal opinion. I believe that the gains from those are pretty near the same. it will depend on the rest of the exhaust set up that is on the car. i have a jdm type-s header, i am very well pleased. i havent dynoed it yet. i would say that by dynoing it would tell the best. i would start a new thread to have people post header dynos.

Well, I ahve decided to continue using my car with the OEM header. It is in good shape so I might as well get some useage out of it. I am really not in a hurry to upgrade it anyway.
Besides, I wud ratha keep da $400+ dollas to spend on mah bytcheZ anyway.
Thanks for all the replies. VERY helpful.

I was thinking for going greddy but after reading this thread it looks like prospeed would be my best bet. whats better merge collector or stamp collector? SS or CC ? Has any ever used prospeeds other products they make? how are they?

before i got my prospeed, i was actually considering doing a collector mod to the stock manifold. shouldn't cost more than $75 bucks at an exhaust shop. Whether there would be real gains, i don't know, since the primaries have more to do with that than anything BUT--the stock manifold does have quite a bottle neck at the collector so it might be a cheap, easy way to a) keep your car looking CARB legal, and b) not spend too much money but help the breathing.
for others looking for a good header value:
as far as header bargains go, i don't think it gets better than a mild steel stamp prospeed/an-r/rage header. Brian tends to be pretty busy over at prospeed, and not to steer business away from him but: there are other options when it comes to comparable headers. I think Kteller is getting into the h22/23 header business, and he's having his designed by the guy (RageDzine is his sn here i think) who did prospeed's.

The gain won't be that significant. You'll just get a little better mid/top end throttle response and lose a little low end.
My .02 cents.
My .02 cents.
Once I get my swap finished and some money my header is the next issue I will address. I am starting to think about the greddy as well, but I was thinking that I might just have a 2.5" collector put on it. Then get a carsound 2.5" and a custom 2.5" cat-back. Honestly, while were on the topics of exhaust I don't understand why some people spend so much money (500+) for a cat-back exhaust. I can get a custom 2.5" with whatever muffler I choose for around 200$.
