So, what exactly makes Honda MTF, Honda MTF???? any oil should do right?
Im not saying any ol oil, 10w-30 or 40 of a good brand of corse. Anyway, I had heard that you can use Mobil 1 syn, correct? I heard it smooths out shifts even more than the Honda MTF... Would there be any negative effects to this. Its a 94 LX with 130K, 2nd and 3rd syncros act/sound weird depending on how I move the shifter.
So, use it? stick with Honda? Also, with the syn, would drain intervals change??
thanks, sohc

where did you hear that?? i don't remember reading anything like that on the bottle. i was told it was 10w-30 with a special additive package.
i use honda mtl, but the shop that did my swap reccomends the redline mtl. the gm synchromesh has been getting lots of praise on the net for a few years now.
what i want to know is if your tranny seems fine with honda mtl will the use of redline or syncrhomesh make it feel better/different?

i believe the honda mtf fluid is basically a 10w 30. which is quite cool actually that hondas can support this type of weight in the transmission. but the mtf just has a synthetic film to it is what i hear.
how many bottles or volume do the 5th gen trannies require? I plan on getting the gm syncromesh...also can someone show me the location of the drain for the manual trannies? Do all auto parts stores sell the syncromesh fluid?
thehonda stuffas far as thte last dealeri was at is mstly for newer transmissions that require teh honda specific oil.its basicallyoilwith a few additives, i wentto buy a few bottles for my transmssion, they asked ifi had a 96+civic, i said no, they said just use10w30, its cheapere meets honda spec for your transmission. So i ran mobil1 10w30, then later put in penzoil syncromesh.

I don't recall where i read this except that it was legitimate & not off an internet forum (ha).
It was part of my research after learning the previous owner of my car (a PhD no less) had done ALL the maint except change the manual tranny fluid. Ever.
I was relieved when I found out 94+ trannies had that synthetic addititive in them (and a possilbe explanation for why my tranny synchros are still good). Actually, at that point, I was glad it had never been touched----> Most definately some dumb-*** Jiffy Lube place would've put in the cheapest, crappiest, non-synth oil they could find.

Bringing up an older thread here...
I just went and picked up a few bottles of MTL (96+) for a 96 tranny I just bought for my 94 lx. To my surprise it looks like a bottle of ATF..
By this I mean that the fluid inside is a redish color and looks much thinner than a 10w30-40..... I didnt think that the MTF was supposed to be redish, but I am used to the 94 MTF which IIRC was more brown/motor oil looking.
Can anyone verify that the 96+ MTF is redish? I could go with syncromesh or something, but it only has like 50K on it so I figure it would be best to use MTF.
Thanks everyone...

i have been running mobil 1 synthetic 10w-30 in my tranny for a while and have had no problems. it uses a little over 2 quarts. i just fill it up until it starts coming out of the fill hole. i use a fluid pump to put it in.
