Default tire question from novice

ok, finally gonna give autox a try. There is one coming to Wilmington, nc this coming sunday. My question is simple, the car is all stock so I know that I will be in HS class. My question is about tires, it is the only thing I am unsure of. I have some 195/50/14's Firehawk tires mounted on 14" OEM CRX Si wheels. What psi should I run at this course as it is a parking lot that is kinda rough b/c of its age.

any suggestions and or comments welcome!

Keeps the tire from rolling over onto the sidewall

typical street/all season tires have a much softer sidewall than performance oriented tires. as RJ said, it helps to keep the tire from rolling over onto its sidewall, keeping more of the tire on the road.

you can actually tweek handling characteristics by playing with tire pressures, but i don't think you need to start messing with that just yet.

i would say inflate them to 40 cold, check them hot after a run and see what has changed. it might not change at all, or they might gain a few psi. either way, i wouldn't go over 45 hot.

thank you all very much. I have been wanting to try auto-x for years and have never had the time and was always afraid of tearing something up. BUT, i have lots of spare parts for my 90' so it is all good.

I have alot of my students (yes I am a HS shop teacher) planning on coming to watch and a few wanting to participate. It looks to be a fun weekend. About 40 cars have signed up thus far so hopefully we have a good turnout.

before you know it you'll be having your high school minions fabricating parts for your car in exchange for seat time.

A good way to check sidewall rollover is to chalk them (I've found that lumber crayon works pretty good for this). Put ~4 marks on the tire, going from a few inches on the tread to a few inches onto the sidewall. If the marks wear off on the sidewall, increase pressures. If the mark still shows on the tread part, lower pressures. Adjustments should be small (1,2,3, psi at a time). I suspect you won't need as high pressures in the rear as the front.

I dont think the car really matters. There are lots of suprises in my old eight valve motor!!!!!!!!!. We also have a garage full of upgrades for the beater so we/he is gonna blow this one up right now then time to go faster.

and yes the go fast bug is already in our blood!!!!!!

The reason I asked was because that car is not legal for Stock class. I believe you will have to run CSP.

why is it not legal for stock class? it is stock std hatch with the d15b in it, dual point injection, everything. The MPFI swap has not been performed yet (next week) and the B16 swap is happening in june or july.................

btw, I really appreciate all this info, I have enjoyed all the threads in this forum as you auto-x guys I find to be VERY helpful and very eager to share knowledge and don't talk bs etc. for that I thank you guys!

actually to get technical it is the 8valve motor out of an HF crx and the 5spd with it, I bought the car for $100 with a bad motor, and got the motor and trans for free.

would the fact that the motor is out of a lesser car kick it out of stock class?

If it is a D15B2, as you have listed, it came from a Civic (or CRX) DX, and you would be legal for CSP (C-Street Prepared). Also, the 14" wheels aren't legal for stock class.

If it is a CRX HF engine (D15B6), you would have to go to SM (Street Modified).

Just a few classing rules technicalities. Don't worry about the class you end up in, just concentrate on driving and having fun.

yeah, it would be the students sweat...

Maybe can start something like colleges have with Formula SAE ... would be cool at least and keep a few kids from turing to the Bling side by Ed-ju-ma-kateing them....

Do what I did with the Tarheel Sport Car Club (raleigh) and when registering, tell the folks taking the money what your car is and the mods you have. They'll make sure you are taken care off. Have fun and try not do get too addicted like I did.

race was awesome, the left me in HS class, 9 cars in that class, I was severly underpowered (good ole 70hp 8valve motor!) but I managed to finish 5th with a 51 sec run, I was extremely happy. I learned alot about airpressure and about running the right lines and setting yourself up for the next corner. Thanks for all the advice guys!

here is my on my best lap.
