The door panels don't come into play... Think about it, the 4 point Autopower part is a roll bar not a full cage. It's the main hoop (that mounts to the floorpan behind the seats) and two down tubes into the hatch (actually go through the rear speaker holes). That should be the only thing necessary to remove, the rear speakers and covers. So if it is a) the correct part and b) installed properly, the whole assembly should be out of the way of the doors.
What you may be hearing about has to do with the 6pt. cage, depending on... If it was a design for the 88's with the thinner door panels with map pockets or it accomodates the later cars with thicker door panels (due to the encapsulated seat belt retrators/hardware). The door bars may be a tight fit in that case. A friend had the original design in his 88 and it would not fit my 91, but when I ordered they addressed this with different door bars.
