Mobile 1 0W-30--> What do you guys think?
Just for grins I put Mobile 1 0W-30 in my Integ at my last oil change (I usually run 5W-30). I figure thinner oil=less friction and since my car doesn't seem to leak or burn oil I shouldn't suffer any ill effects from this, right? Could this oil be too thin and give me inadequate oiling or low oil pressure? Any thoughts?
I figure thinner oil=less friction
Thinner oil = Less friction?????? What??
Heavier oil provides better lubrication not less. 0w-30 is probably OK. I use Valvevoline Synpower(synthetic) 10w-30 and it seems to make the enigne more quiet after a couple of changes.

[/QUOTE]When the crankshaft spins it splashes the oil in the oil pan all thoughout the shortblock. With thick oil it takes more energy to do this. With thinner oil the crank (and other moving parts) can move more freely during their rotation. While this is not that significant at lower RPM's at 5k+ the losses from 'windage' can be significant.

Actually the windage tray is designed to prevent the oil from being thrown around so the crank doesn't have to move through the oil mist.
The reason the 0W-30 oil reduces friction is because it does not thicken up as much when it warms up. A multi weight oil is designed to thicken as the temps go up. The 0 weight oils are designed to provide low initial start up resistance, which allows the engine to get to operating temperature faster, for both mileage and emissions reasons...
Any of the synthetic oils are 'slipperier' than a comparable petroleum based product and can absorb much more contaminants and still provide the necessary lubricating characteristics. That's why they have extended oil change intervals. Changing oil at 3k miles, even for the petroleum based oils is a waste of money. A good oil will be able to go 7-8K and still provide adequate lubication properties, with full synthetics going 25K or more. That's why the military doesn't just change oil at time/mileage intervals, they have it analyzed for metal and other contaminant content. When it gets to have too much of something in it that's when they change it.

Thinner oil = less friction. That is correct.
0W oil has less viscosity at lower temperatures. Less viscosity means that an object, such as a piston, doesn't need to push as hard to move it.
Plus, heavier oil does not always equate to better lubrication. Thinner oil distributes itself better than heavy oil.
0W oil reduces low-temperature friction because its viscosity is lower than 5W or 10W.

I've been runing MObil 1 5W-30 synthetic for the past few changes. I've changed between 7k and 8 k each time. So is this unnecessary? Will this stuff be safe in excess of 10k miles? How about filter life? I just use stock HOnda filters. I mean, it's about $20 to change it, and it takes me all of 20 minutes. But still, if I can go longer between changes...
And will weather affect the intervals?
Thanx!

just use what manufacturer (HONDA) suggests. better yet use OEM oil instead of other brands out there. its not whiskey, you know.

You should be able to safely go 10K or more miles with Mobil 1 full synthetic, and if you're concerned about the filter change it at 5K and add another 1/2 quart.
I ran Amsoil full synthetic for 25K miles in my Turbo RX7 and never had any problems, other than having to add oil on occasion since the Rex uses oil by design.
As for OEM oils, they usually are premium quality so they should go the full interval the maker says it should.

I use Mobil 1 5W30 in my GSR and change it out every 3000 miles, so whats this? Now you guys are telling me that I can go longer w/o changing the oil??? IS THIS SO????
I'm in disbelief...anyone wanna try to convince me?

Umm... I don't think anyone will really be able to convince you other than yourself. Changing the oil every 3000mi with full synthetic is the best thing to do for your car, but what if I told you that if you changed it every 10000mi instead, your car would still be nearly as happy?
Changing your oil every 10000mi instead of 3000mi may only mean the difference between your engine blowing up at 290000mi instead of 300000mi.
My hope is that you continue to support our poor economy by changing your oil every 3000mi with oil that costs $4.70/qt.

I don't think 0 weight oil is recommneded for hot weather since it will break down a lot sooner under high temp. than a 10 weight oil.
I change my oil AND filter every 6k miles with Mobil1 10w-30.

The factory manual tells you to change engine oil every 7500 miles. But if you want to take good care of your car, more frequent oil changes is recommended. Oil change should be done every 3000 miles. But some people change their oil every 2000~2500 miles. It depends on how much you care about your car I guess.
I switched to synthetic because I drive 2k miles a months. Seems like I was always changing oil. I figure if the factory manual say conventional oil can last 7.5k then I should be able to leave synthetic in for that long. I made my last change after 7k with the mobil in it. Looked better than my conventional after 3k. Not sludgy at all. Drained right out
you people need to read CAREFULLY!!! The owner manuals recommends to change the oil every 3750 miles under SEVERE conditions and 7500 miles under NORMAL conditions!!!! It also defines the terms SEVERE and NORMAL. 95% of people will fall under SEVERE conditions!!! READ CAREFULLY!
very true. Severe conditions in a service manual are about equal to our daily driving, not to mention periodically racing...
AMSOIL... y'all said it best. I use the series 2000 0w-30 in my tranny AND my engine. If i could drink this stuff I would. It's awesome oil and lasts soooo much longer than other synthetics. I change my filter every 10,000 miles and change the oil every 20,000 miles. I top it off about once a week or as needed to keep it at full all the time. I think AMSOIL recommends changing the filter every 12,500 miles (6 month max) and oil every 35,000 miles (12 month max), or some rediculous number like that.... under "normal" circumstances that is.
LONG LIVE AMSOIL!
whoooa, sweet idea... a group buy on Amsoil! Who wants to finance this one? lol

If you live in a cold area then yes...but you locale says s.cal...I'd go with 10w-40
Low viscousity oils tend to burn and cause sludge and carbon build up in hot weather@areas...if you have 90+ degree F weather in the summer...get at least 10 on the lowend and 40 to 50 depending on engine specs...
