OT: Racers/pit crew/etc - would you find value in custom ear plugs?
I apologize for this in advance, but the exhaust thread made me think of it.
In a few months, my fiancee should be receiving her NC license for hearing aids, meaning she would be legally allowed to make custom ear moulds (ear plugs). Washable, reusable plugs that attenuate to around 27-32 dB (if I'm remembering right). She made a pair for me a while ago, and I think they're great, just for around-the-house use (power tools, lawn mowing, etc).
She'd need about ten minutes of your time to inject goo into your ears, wait for it to harden, then yank it out. Then mail it off to have moulds made of your ear innards, available in a wide range of custom colors. A couple of weeks later, you'd have a pair of custom plugs ready.
Any interest? I'm not sure what the cost would be, as I got my trial pair for free. I'm guessing it would be less than your local ENT would charge do to the same thing.

yeah.. this would make the biggest difference for me.. i'd be interested if it wasn't uber-expensive.. i've lost enough of my hearing as it is..

Less than $50 I'd think. Maybe even lower.
I'm not posting this as a money-making venture for Bef or myself, and I'm not sure she'd even be able to do it outside an office, even with a license.
But living with an audiologist will sure make you appreciate your hearing, especially since I *already* have a mild high-frequency loss, and that's just from concerts - not being at the track every weekend like many of you are.
Besides, she scares me with stories of how cochlear implants are done (peel the ear back, drill hole in skull, etc
).

I would love to have something like this, but I don't know if FedEx would accept my ear for shipping to your neck of the woods.

you could probably get a mold done and just sent it out to him

Bef doesn't create the actual plugs, some hearing aid company does that. She'd take the impressions and get that done for you.
Why it takes a state license to do that, I have no idea.

Sweet.
Bring her to the track and set up shop?

as a data point, I had some made last year by an audiologist. They attenuate about 30dB (which is sufficient to maintain a good comfort level in an open-headered Type-R) and cost $175. I love them, they are very comfortable - I have no regrets about how much I paid. If you can get them done for $50, that's a screaming good deal.
Uh, did I say $50, I meant $150
Just kidding.
All depends on her work situation. If she lands the job she's trying for now, I believe this is something she would be able to do. And yes, RJ, it would be an excuse to drag her along to track events

damn wish I lived out there, well my aunt is an audiologist, maybe I should ask her! Wearing ear plugs for my job all day does get uncomfortable after awhile and custom plugs would be great!

A driver i crew for sometimes lost one of his custom ear pieces that is done this way, only his fit aorund a radio earpiece.
he went to a local ear guy and had another one made (exactly as described) for $40.oo (not sure if this would mean $80 for a pair or not..I will have to ask)
He had them done in different colors also..Red for "right ear" and green for..well..i guess for "not right ear"
