Default help w/ alternator replacement.!!

ok im changing the alternator in my crx. ive got everything apart but i cant get the bottom bolt out that holds the alternator to the mounting bracket. and i tried to take the whole bracket off but the nuts are just stripping. they seem smaller than 14mm but nothing else will fit.

any help would be great its really pissing me off.

I'm confused. It's only got one nut that you need to worry about with that bolt. IF you've stripped it then its time for the good old Bolt Out kit. If it's not stripped then you need to put some more muscle into it i guess..........Some WD40, or the likes.

Are you trying to loosen the bolt from the top of the engine bay or is it jacked up? You'll get more leverage if you're under it. I always take the alternator out from the bottom, its easier for me that way.

Ohhhh.........got ya........i was confused.......It takes a little "massaging", esepecially if this the first time its been off in a while. You could try something like a rubber hammer or pretty much anything to try to bang it a little loose.. Once its loose it'll slide right out. Its just stuck from being in there so long.

WHy would you drill it out?

I had the same problem and soaked it in grease and liquid wrench, take a cnter punch or something similar and put it on the middle of the bolt and wail away, should pop out.

If you have an extra set of hands, ask them to go form the top of the car and pull hard up or push down, get them to move it around while you hammer and itll come for sure.

lol I really just dont get how it isnt comint out. Maybe some jackass before you tack welded it?

If you do drill it out though youd have to drill it perfectly because if the whole is made bigger on the alt and bracket then they will be able to wiggle around a bit and up and down and I dunno how good that would be to keep the belt in place or maybe some serious squeekage.

Anyways, good luck

If you've got enough room, get some Vice Grips on the head of the bolt and tap the Vice Grips from behind.

Next time you have to do pound on the end of a bolt to remove it, screw a nut on the end of it to protect the threads. And make sure that the nut is on more than a little. Otherwise, you will just mess up the outer threads. Furthermore, consider the nut you use to be expendable.
