Default Will a Compression Ratio of 12.5:1 Ping with 94 Octane?

With stock internals, will an ITR engine with:

Civic Type-R Pistons (.025" over)
Middle layer taken out of Stock Honda HeadGasket
(yielding an estimated 12.5:1 compression ratio)

PING with 94 Octane?

Thanks,
KJ

with a reprogrammed ecu, it won't ping. And i think if you just retard the timing, it won't ping either.

All I got is a J&S Safeguard...

But like you said...I guess having a Proactive approach like a reprogrammed ECU is safer than a Reactive approach like the J&S.

What if I just have the CR at 12.2:1 instead?

KJ, I'm running 12.4:1 compression and I don't have any pinging though I did have my ECU reprogrammed (Hondata system). The beauty of reprogamming is that you can be sure that you're running a tiny bit on the rich side at all RPM levels all the way to redline. Peace of mind is a beautiful thing when you're running this kind of compression. It's money well spent if you means you're not damaging your engine.

Just a thought.......

Do you go from F/I (when I remeber correctly you blew your engine) to all motor?

Yes Austrian...the rings on my car were dying before I put the Turbo on. Having the Turbo on just destroyed the already weak rings.

Car has 75,000 miles (120,000 kms) on it now.

I'm selling the car in 7 months, so either I take the turbo off now (for free since it comes off when the engine gets taken apart), or I pay $500 to take it off 7 months from now.

If I went all out and got JE 9:1 pistons and Crower rods and a Hondata system...I'd be throwing all my money out in 7 months when I sell the car. I won't even get 20% of that money back.

Plus, who would want a N/A Type-R with 9:1 compression ratio?

So I really got no choice. I put it back to N/A now and upgrade what costs me nothing to upgrade (i.e. pistions, since I need new ones anyway).

Then after 7 months, I can just sell the car as is without having to put in money to sell it.

I defenitely don't want a CR so high that it won't be streetable. Otherwise It'll just become a bigger headache. I just want to rebuild the car and be able to sell it worry free. Phew.

I have around 11.3CR with 91 octane gas with octane booster for each tank, and I can still hear ping when it is really hot outside. I am sure I can run without the octane booster, but I just don't have the gut to try it out!! But the cost of running a bottle of octane booster is really getting to me!!

I would say get the J&S and be safe with it. That what I will do next spring and then I can may be safe some money on the octane booster!!

I run 12.5:1 on 94 (Canadian 94) and have no pinging.

Can you always hear it? I though you can only hear it if its pinging bad.

Also, doesn't our computer detect pinging, and retard the timing automatally?

One last question... If you have to retard you ignition to run a higher compression, do you still gain hp, or break even?

thanx typermsm,

i was thinking on this same setup, but with the oem gasket unchanged. the expected CR would be 12.1:1 (?)...
i just don't know the differences between the overbore piston and the oem size... which should i choose? the car has already 140.000km on.
