How do i paint rims?
i'm sorry i have no access to posting this in the appearance forum but i do have an 91 civic this was my last resort. Well i have HX rims and i wanted to paint them black, i know i can't just coat it with black paint so i was wondering if anyone could inform me with the correct way. thank you in advance
This is the way they should be done for best results:
First sandblasted and primed. Painted by gun not by a can from some bodyshop supplier and than finally clear coated to make sure the paint does not chip. Brand new rims.

If you don't have alot of money or access to a sand blaster and you want them painted quick, use index cards between the rim and the tire and use a high temp laquer paint. as long as you laquer the paint will stick. If your rims are corrodded /rusted then consider sanding first.
i wouldnt listen to the above posts...
give the wheels a light scuffing so the paint sticks.. either take tape and cover up the wheel, or take index cards and put them in between the wheel and tire, but i couldnt get this to work, so its easiest to put tape right where the wheel meets the rubber. Get a sandable primer, spray on like 2 medium coats, then sand smooth with fine sandpaper . Then get your paint, I highly suggest using dupli kolor or plasi coat paint, You will need like 2 cans. Spray light coats , lets dry , spray another coat until its to where you like it. Let them dry and put them on. heres my transformation:

the shitty wheels actually looked decent, then didnt have to worry about it cause i sold it.

just clean them with a high pressure wash. then dry with a cloth to get any excess dirt or water off. wait till completly dry and then prime and paint. i actually didn't prime my wheels and i haven't had any problems.
just paint them.

i had a great idea on this the other day: of course scuff up and clean the wheels, then apply that tire shine **** to the tires, then ****** paint away! let it all dry up for a day or whatever and hose off the tires then your set cuz paint wont stick to the treated tires

this works but it gets messy. you can also use any kind of vasiline , but its easiest to just use paper

Listen to him. I have painted 5 sets of rims and the way he has described is the best way imho. It may take a few extra hours, but its well worth it to get a perfect finish that will last on the rims. As far as paint goes, i have always used the Duplicolor brand wheel paint from Autozone, that stuff is amazing! Dont forget to pickup a can of duplicolor wheel clear paint as well, makes the finish look a bit nicer.

That is the greatest thing I think I've ever read

easiest and cheapest way in my eyes is to get a can of aircraft remover to get rid of the old finish on the HX wheels, sand them down so you don't have any pits, primer it. Now when the primer is finished you can either use a rattle can to paint them and get it looking good if your careful plus a coat of clear coat or have a paint shop paint them.
That I think it's probably the cheapest and best looking
