Default why wont his vtec work?

my buddy just had a b16 put in his crx and when the vtec kicks in it feels like its hitting rev limiter. the car wont allow him to go past 4500 rpms??? whenever vtec hits. he has the correct ecu. the car seems like it should be pulling a lot harder even out of vtec. please help

Are there any codes on the ecu? Check engine light?

he used to have a crank poss. sensor code but he got a new distributor and its gone. he has a idle sensor code being thrown but i wouldnt think that has anything to do with it.

maybe the car is going into limp mode! When it goes into limp it wont let the car go over a certain rpm! So you wont damage the vehicle.

Yeah, but usually when the ecu goes into limp mode, there is usually a CEL or code on the ecu.

could it be a bad ground, oil pressure or vaccum lines?

Not unless you have your car wired for OBD1 or 2 which ever that GSR ecu is. Go ahead and double check the grounds and wiring. Also, pull the VTEC solenoid off, and inspect the screen on the solenoid. Sometimes the screen gets clogged with gunk and doesn't allow sufficient oil to get to the VTEC mechanisms.
