road racing a crx
i am planning on getting into road racing with my 88 crx which i just bought when i move down to sacramento next school year and i was wondering if you guys had any suggestions on where i should get parts from. any help would be greatly appriciated.
drive the car first before modifying anything. check out thunderhill.com for list of street schools, which are instructor led trackdays. other options i suggest is unlimitedlaps. do some basic maintenence first, like brake fluid flush and oil change, but really dont need to "prepare" a car before you are yourself "prepared". check my road racing FAQ for more info.
I agree, learn to drive it before you mod it out. before you begin your career in HPDEs you'll need brakes and tires... thats about it. i run falkens azenis and carbotech XP8s. thats about all i run... ghetto exhaust and an AEM CAI... they dont really help in HPDE at all... and the stock suspension has gotten rave reviews from my instructors so far. i've got koni yellows and a gc setup sitting at home waititng for me to learn more and more so that when they go on they dont hurt my learning curve. also, i plan on putting in seats, back half cage, and harnesses before the suspension... you gotta be able to feel the car before you can really drive it... and crx seats dont let you feel all that much, especially with tons of seat time in it (they wear out). WCHC is for you!

You can do some stuff to the car. I mean learning to drive is the most important part. There is this guy in a 91 CRX si stock motor and can roll most people. granted he has been doing road racing for a long time but to watch this guy on track is amazing.
if you have any questions, you can IM me. I have been with NASA ( National Auto Sport Association ) I have worked grid for 2 1/2 years. I highly recommend that you do go to a couple of HPDE's

What kind of parts? You're going to need a lot of them

to HPDE he really doesnt need much. my stocker is very fun and leathal to the V8 community. learn to drive... then mod it out... course travis you do race so you might (and probably do) know more then me.

Hey, I noticed you have JMU racing.......I saw they had a car in NASCAR for a race or two. It's weird to see a university sponsored car. Do you know anything about that?
To the OP, just get some nice tires and brakes, like already mentioned, and take it from there. You've got a good car to begin with.

it was done by the virginia education fund or something. MADISON MOTORSPORTS was not involved... unfortuneatly wish we had a better drive

Well, I took the question to mean actual competition, and I'd be happy to share places for safety gear and replacement parts that will be required to get a log book, but I still don't know what parts we're talking about. I know some good links really helped me out when I was (was? I mean still...) building the rex. Performance parts can come whenever based on budget, but there's still an amazing amount of crap I had to buy just to put a (mostly) stock CRX on the track for competition.

what are you looking at say to turn a stock crx si into a H4 car? suspension, new bushings, cage, seat, harness, dead pipe? window net... ok i guess it does get to be pricey at that.

For me, I needed a bunch of OEM parts to make the 15 year old car track ready (new bearings, hubs, bushings, cap/rotor/plugs/wires/battery/timing belt/cam seals, various boots, MC/booster/calipers/brake lines/rotors/pads/shoes/fluid, etc). Then you add the cage, seat, harness, fire system, net, kill switch, and transponder. Then you need a suit, shoes, gloves, and a helmet if you don't already have that stuff. And you STILL haven't made the car any faster and it's basically stock. Then you need a log book, membership/school/license money, tires, other consumables, and entry fees. And you STILL haven't made the car any faster. Then the $$ really starts to fly.
